Streets where people do not move much
Bundamba covers 11.0 square kilometres on Ipswich's eastern side, 6.3 kilometres east-northeast of the Ipswich centre and 35.1 kilometres southwest of the Brisbane centre, in Ipswich City. At the 2021 census 6,542 people lived here. Bundamba Creek runs through the suburb toward the Bremer and the racecourse fills the flats off Brisbane Road. The housing is coal-era timber and workers' cottages through the older streets, brick family houses from the postwar decades, and newer infill toward the creek. What ties them together is tenure. People stay here, and so do their belongings, and this is exactly why the rugs we collect from Bundamba are usually much older than the ones we collect from newer suburbs.
A rug bought once and kept for twenty five years is a good decision. A wash on a sensible interval is what keeps it a good decision.
The arithmetic of keeping a rug
Replacing a decent wool rug costs a great deal more than washing one, and in these streets that maths is understood without anyone having to explain it. What is less obvious is the timing. A rug that has never been washed loses ground slowly: grit walked in from the street settles below the tips of the pile and works at the fibre with every footstep, so by the time the piece looks tired it has already given up years it did not need to. Washed on a sensible interval, the same rug can serve two or three decades and still look worth keeping. That is the entire argument, and it is why the assessment matters every bit as much as the wash itself. We look at what you have and say what it needs, and where a rug will not earn its keep back, that is said before the work rather than after the invoice.
Creek-flat damp, inland dust, and a clean run east
Two things work on a rug here, and they work in opposite seasons. Through the dry months the heat drives fine grit down past the tips. Through the wet months the creek flats hold moisture on the low ground and the wool takes it up. By March a rug in one of these houses is carrying both, one layered over the other, and neither shifts under a vacuum head because neither one lives anywhere near the surface. That is what the bath is for. The trip is short for the distance, roughly 48 kilometres and about 40 minutes: Brisbane Road, the Ipswich Motorway, then east and off at Computer Road. The dry work happens before anything gets wet. Soil is drawn up out of the pile, the rug then takes a hand wash in the Yatala bath, dries indoors under conditions we manage, and has its nap combed back before the motorway leg home.
Long-tenure houses hold long-tenure rugs, and a rug that has been on the same floor for twenty five years has never had the load taken out of it. Vacuuming clears the top and nothing else. Washing at the foundation is what actually resets the piece. About 7 days door to door, with one figure agreed at inspection.

Rug Washing Bundamba
Full immersion washing, which means the entire rug goes under rather than getting the surface worked over. It is hand washed at the correct pH and rinsed until nothing further comes out.
Rugs here are bought to serve, not to be replaced every few years, and that is exactly the sort of ownership that pays off under water. The fibre in a well made wool rug is usually sound long after the colour has gone flat, and the colour has almost always survived intact under the grit. Getting it back is the whole job.

Stain Removal
Tea beside the recliner, a plate dropped at a family lunch, oil carried in off a work boot. Fibre identified first, then the treatment matched to it.
Older rugs and older dyes need caution, because a product that is routine on a modern piece can pull colour out of one from the seventies. We trial it in a concealed section, then treat to what the fibre actually is, and give a plain forecast before we begin, including the straight no where a mark has already set.

Pet Stain and Odour
A dog that has lived in the same front room for ten years and a rug that has been under it the whole time is a common Bundamba booking.
Depth is the problem. It travels through the pile and settles in the backing, so anything sprayed on top only treats the layer above it. The bath rinses that residue out from below, enzymes finish what the bath started, and the piece is dried through so that no trace of damp is left in it.

Rug Steam Cleaning
Extraction under hot water for the practical end of the collection: a mat by the back steps, a runner along the hallway, the synthetic in a spare bedroom.
On anything worth less than its own wash, steam is the correct spend and we say so without dressing it up. It cleans synthetics genuinely well and turns them around fast. No wool or hand knotted rug is put through it, and the assessment separates them before a booking is written.

Rug Dry Cleaning
The dry method, for rugs that must not be submerged, usually because the dye is unstable or the foundation has gone brittle over the decades.
In long-tenure streets the delicate rug is very nearly always the one that came down through the family. Those are the pieces worth extra care. A dye check decides whether water can be used, and where it cannot the rug is treated with compounds by hand, with the finding explained rather than the price quietly moved.

Rug Moth Treatment
Moth grubs work the quiet places: beneath a sideboard left in place for a decade, behind a wardrobe, along the skirting of a closed room.
Furniture in these houses tends to stay where it was put, which gives moths an easy run at a wool rug. By the time a thin patch shows, months of work have already gone on. A racecourse, a stone axe and an 1873 schoolhouse

The Ipswich racecourse has run on these flats for over 130 years.
A track that has kept the same job for 130 years suits our trade. One thing, done properly, on schedule, year after year.
Race meetings were being held on the Bundamba course by 12 April 1888, and the Ipswich Amateur Turf Club formed in 1890 to race here. The Ipswich Jockey Club held its first meeting on the course on 21 April 1900, and the track has carried the district's racing ever since, renamed Ipswich racecourse in 1991 under the Ipswich Turf Club. Today it runs meetings nearly every week of the year, headlined by the Ipswich Cup, and race day still fills Brisbane Road the way it has for a century.
An Aboriginal name the district has carried through every spelling.
A name about tools made properly is a fair patron for a workshop trade. Ours is rug washing, done by hand at Yatala for 29 years.
Bundamba takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning place of the stone axe, a record of the toolmaking country this was long before the collieries. The colonial decades spelled it several ways, Bundanba among them, until the spelling was standardised as Bundamba on 30 January 1932. The creek, the suburb and the racecourse all carry the name today.

Teaching started on this side of the creek on 7 February 1873, inside the district's first mining decade, and a successor school still works the same ground 150 years on. Education was then built up in layers: a second school on the upper ground in 1874, the state secondary college from 27 January 1970, and the TAFE campus on Byrne Street training the region's trades today.

How much does rug cleaning in Bundamba cost?
Size, fibre and condition decide it between them, so an inspection has to come before any figure. Once the number is given it is fixed, and both trips travel on the Ipswich day. Where a rug does not warrant professional washing, that is what you are told at the inspection instead of a price.
Our rug has been on the floor since the nineties. Can it be brought back?
Usually a long way back. Rugs of that vintage here are typically dulled by settled dust rather than worn out, and the colour is intact beneath. We check the dyes first, and where a rug cannot take water we use the low moisture method. Where a rug genuinely has finished, we show you why.
How soon can a rug be back if we are short of time?
Inside two days, through the 48-hour express service, which carries an additional cost. Failing that a rug is away roughly a week. Whichever applies, the piece comes home with no damp left in it anywhere, which counts for something after the sort of summer this ground gets.
