Because Building Dust Is Not the Same
as House Dust

Getting the dry stage right matters more than usual on a piece that has lived through building work. Plaster dust turns to a slurry the instant it meets water and then travels down through the pile instead of out of it. Taken off while everything is still dry it simply leaves. Skip that and you have effectively rendered the inside of your own rug.

Once the fine building dust has gone, water does the rest: around every fibre, through the foundation, and out again with the rinse. A rug that has sat through a renovation usually looks two shades lighter than it should and its owner has stopped noticing. What comes back from the bath is a shock in the good direction, and the difference is not subtle.

Renovation marks are their own category, because the products involved are designed to stick and often need a solvent approach rather than a detergent one. The fibre is identified, tests are run out of sight, and each mark gets the method it needs. You are told beforehand which will come out, which will lighten, and which are now permanent.

The trouble here went straight past the tufts and gripped the underside, which is the layer no aerosol will reach. Immersion works that deposit loose from below, enzymes take care of the leftovers, and the rug is held until nothing damp is left in it. If the dye has taken harm you hear it at the assessment rather than at the door.

Interwar homes on big blocks breathe well when they are lived in and badly when they are sealed up for a job. Damp, dust and whatever the trades were using all end up in the same soft surface. Immersion pulls that mixture apart and the rinse water takes it off the property. How completely the piece dries afterwards determines whether the room stays clear.

After building work this is rarely the right answer, because the fine dust settled everywhere evenly rather than in one place. Clean a patch of it and you have a bright rectangle in a dulled field. Before any work has been done the answer is often yes and you will hear that instead, which costs you less. Somebody looks at the whole piece first either way.

Those pieces are made to be used and replaced, so spending immersion money on them makes no sense and nobody here will suggest it. Extraction cleans the face properly and has them back within days. Hand knotted work stays clear of the process entirely, and sorting the two apart is a large part of why the assessment happens.

Houses of this age hold at least one rug older than the wiring, and testing it before the bath is the entire reason the assessment exists. If the answer comes back against water, dry compounds are worked in by hand in stages, and one limitation gets stated plainly: dry work removes far less mineral dust than a bath does, so a renovation rug gets less back.

Renovations are a common cause here, because roofs and walls get opened up and then rain arrives. A wet rug begins souring underneath within roughly two days, whatever the reason for the water. Ring on the day, tell us the hours it has been sitting, and there is a verdict before any expenditure. Some come back completely and some genuinely do not.

Rugs get rolled up and stowed for months while a renovation runs, and that storage is where most of this starts. Anything visible on the surface established itself underneath some weeks earlier. Inside the bath an antimicrobial stage lifts the colony and its food supply together, and taking the piece dry through its depth leaves nothing behind for a second one.

A wool piece stowed away for a six month renovation is close to ideal for them, which is why the damage is nearly always found at the moment somebody unrolls it. Egg, grub and adult get dealt with in a single treatment, and the casings come free of the foundation in the bath. In an open-plan room where the kitchen and the living area are now one space, that delay is worth something and it is the whole of what is on offer. To call the result a barrier would be dishonest, so we do not. The rug reads and feels exactly as it did, and taking the step or leaving it is the household's decision.
