A village strung along one road on the plateau top
Springbrook is 52.7 square kilometres of plateau country against the New South Wales border, rainforest through most of it, crossed by small creeks and rising to Mount Mumdjin at 1,021 metres. The village itself strings along Springbrook Road across the top. There were 659 residents at the 2016 census and 705 in 2021, so this is a small place and we will not pretend otherwise. What it does have in quantity is weather. Nobody up here needs telling that a wool rug behaves differently on this mountain than it does at Mudgeeraba, and the households that have been here a while have usually stopped trying to solve it at home.

The housing is a mountain village's housing: older timber cottages and chalets built for cool air, guest houses and bed and breakfast accommodation that trade on the mist, and newer pole homes tucked into the treeline. Fireplaces run for a good half of the year, which puts a fine ash through every wool pile in the village, and the rugs themselves were chosen for warmth rather than for looks, so they get walked on constantly. Guest accommodation adds a second pattern on top: rooms that turn over weekly, wet boots at the door, and no realistic window in which a rug could be taken out of service for a fortnight. Village households tend to own more wool per person than anywhere else on our runs, simply because that is what works in this climate, and most of those pieces have been up here longer than their current owners have.

Cloud sits on the village for days at a stretch, rain is a companion rather than an event, and winter nights bite hard enough to keep every fireplace working. Mould gets going underneath long before anyone smells anything, and by the time the smell arrives the growth has had a season to establish. Odour Removal
The mountain smell: cool timber, wood smoke and long damp, settled into wool over a season and no longer coming out with an airing.
There is no draught up here strong enough to fix this, because the cause is a residue held inside the pile rather than air passing over it. Dissolving that residue in the bath and rinsing it out is the only thing that ends it. The rug comes back with no smell at all, which on this plateau is a noticeable thing to walk into.

Rug Spot Cleaning

Rug Dry Cleaning
Not every rug can take water. Where the swab says the colour will travel, the piece is worked in sections with low moisture compounds instead.
Older mountain rugs are often the ones that fail the swab, having spent decades in damp air with dyes that were never firmly set. The compound method is slow, sectioned and deliberately conservative. A post office argument, a new road, and a creek that stops purling
How a rainforest plateau became a village with visitors.
Settlers called the plateau Springwood in 1906, and the name is recorded as changed to Springbrook for the post.
Small details decide whether a service works. Every rug is tagged and recorded before it goes anywhere near the water, and it comes back to the address it left.
The plateau was originally known as the Numinbah Plateau. When the first group of settlers came up from northern New South Wales in 1906 they called their new settlement Springwood, and the mail immediately disagreed: letters kept confusing this mountain with the Springwood in the Blue Mountains, and the name is recorded as changed to Springbrook to keep the post moving. The dairy farms those settlers cut out of the rainforest have mostly gone back to green, but the word their postal trouble produced is on every map of the mountain.
A proper road up the mountain was cut in the mid-1920s, and the first car is recorded reaching the plateau in June 1926.

For its first two decades this was a place you rode or walked to. A decent road up the mountain was built in the mid-1920s and the first car is recorded as reaching the settlement in June 1926. What came up the new road was tourism: guest houses opened across the plateau through the 1920s, and visitors have been the mountain's industry ever since, with the community hall following by 1947. A century on the pattern is unchanged, with weekenders climbing the same alignment to sleep inside the cloud.
Purling Brook Falls drops off the plateau edge in a single plunge recorded at just over 100 metres.

Purling Brook is named for the sound of it, purl being an old word for the ripple of running water. At the plateau's edge the brook stops purling and simply lets go, one unbroken plunge recorded at just over 100 metres and clear of the cliff face almost the whole way down, recorded as the tallest waterfall in the national park. The creek gathers itself at the bottom and carries on into the valley as though nothing had happened to it.

Do you actually come up the mountain?
Yes, and it costs you nothing. Plateau collections are batched onto a planned day so the climb is done properly rather than squeezed onto the end of a coastal route, and we tell you which day that is when you book. The pickup and the return both travel on it.
What does rug cleaning in Springbrook cost?
