An honest figure for the pieces you kept
The rugs that made it to Scarborough were chosen twice, once at purchase and once at the downsize. They get inspected properly, priced once, and the price holds.

Rug washing at the top of the Redcliffe Peninsula
Downsized homes, upgraded rugs
Scarborough holds the peninsula's northern tip, 3.3 square kilometres of crescent bays, red cliffs and named points with 9,178 residents at the 2021 census. The old fibro beach shacks have largely given way to two kinds of homes: low-maintenance brick from the retiree decades and newer apartments taking the bay views, and both run hard floors against the salt air. The households are the interesting part. Many arrived here by downsizing out of a big family home, keeping only the wool and Persian pieces that earned their place and letting the rest go. That selection process means Scarborough's rug population is better than its size suggests, and pieces chosen twice deserve washing that respects the choice: by hand, in full immersion, at our own facility.
Salt arrives on three winds here. It leaves in exactly one way, dissolved in a bath.
What water on three sides does to wool
Scarborough faces Moreton Bay to the east, Deception Bay to the west and open water to the north, so sea air reaches every room from every direction, every day of the year. The salt it carries settles into rug pile and works quietly: it pulls moisture from the air and holds it against the fibre, dulling colour, stiffening the hand of good wool and feeding must in the foundation. Sand comes indoors with it, a fine abrasive grinding at the base of the pile each time someone crosses the room, and between them the two shorten a rug's presentable life by years. Neither leaves under a vacuum, because neither lives at the surface. The immersion wash at Yatala dissolves the salt load and floats the grit up out of the foundation in a single process, and the controlled dry despatches it home genuinely dry, squared up to face the sea air on even terms again.
One run for the whole peninsula
The peninsula run is one of our longest-standing: Scarborough, Redcliffe, Newport, Margate and Kippa-Ring gathered on a single scheduled day, with pickup and delivery included in the arrangement. The driver rolls and carries each rug from the door, the van crosses the Ted Smout Bridge and takes the Gateway and M1 south, about 80 kilometres that cost you nothing and demand nothing of you. A week later the same run brings everything home, washed, dried through and groomed. Households booking several pieces come out ahead, since rug number two and beyond each collect $20 off, and neighbours at the point have a habit of coordinating pickups over the fence. The written re-wash guarantee travels with every piece: two days to raise anything at all, and the bath runs again for nothing.

The harbour, the beach and the 1878 gamble
The top of the peninsula has always backed itself.
The peninsula's working harbour: trawlers, yachts and fish and chips.
Harbourside living pushes salt into every soft furnishing in the house. Our immersion wash removes it from the one that matters most, the rug, at a depth no home clean reaches.
The 13.7 hectare Scarborough Boat Harbour is the maritime end of the peninsula, home to the fishing fleet, the marina berths and the seafood outlets that make it a weekend institution. A 20 hectare artificial reef, Turner Reef, sits a nautical mile offshore and keeps the local fishing honest. The harbour precinct is where Scarborough feels most like the working seaside town it was originally laid out to be.
Officially Queensland's friendliest beach, backed by 140 years of shoreline.
Beach-park households track in sand as well as salt, and sand grinds at a rug's base like fine abrasive. Washing it out of the foundation is precisely what our Yatala floor is built for.
Scarborough Beach Park was named Queensland's Friendliest Beach in 2003 and Australia's Friendliest in 2004, and the titles fit: sheltered swimming, playgrounds and picnic lawns along the low red cliffs. Queens Beach next door carries older credentials, with land above it reserved in 1884 for the seaside residence of Samuel Griffith, the Queensland premier who helped write the Constitution. The shoreline has been the suburb's front room for 140 years.
Auctioned as a seaside town in 1878, named after Yorkshire's great resort.
A suburb this long established holds long-serving rugs in long-held homes. Our honest assessment tells you which pieces justify a full hand wash, with 29 years of experience behind the answer.
Land in the new marine township of Scarborough went to auction in August 1878, and a re-survey in 1882 offered 250 allotments to buyers chasing the sea air. The name borrowed the reputation of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, England's original seaside resort, and the ambition eventually caught up: the town stayed small until Scarborough State School opened on 9 March 1925 with 30 students, then grew into the settled bayside suburb it is today.

Scarborough questions we hear on the peninsula run
What might a Scarborough rug wash come to?
The piece prices itself on size, fibre and state, which is why the inspection comes before any figure. Once quoted, the number holds, the peninsula run covers both collection and return, and a rug that does not merit professional treatment is called out at assessment.
We downsized and kept two good rugs. Should they be washed before storage or use?
Before either, ideally. A move stirs up years of embedded grit, and storage locks whatever is present into the fibre. A full wash and complete dry resets both pieces, and the second rug on the booking is $20 off.
An ageing dog has started urinating on the wool rug. Will the smell actually leave?
Yes, because the treatment goes to the layer the urine actually occupies, the foundation. The bath drives it out through the backing and an enzyme stage neutralises the rest. Sprays fail precisely because they stop at the surface, and humid sea air keeps re-activating whatever they leave behind.
Do you collect from Redcliffe, Newport and Margate on the same day?
Yes, the whole peninsula shares one scheduled run from the point down. Neighbours often book together once they see our van in the street, and every additional rug on a booking earns $20 off.
Can the turnaround be quicker than the usual week?
There is: the 48-hour express, run at additional cost for genuine deadlines like settlements and family events. It moves through the identical wash and full drying as the standard service, simply at the front of the queue rather than in it.
Why does our rug feel sticky and look flat near the windows?
That is salt at work: it attracts moisture, mats the pile and dulls the colour, worst where sea air moves through. It cannot be vacuumed out because it is bonded into the fibre. An immersion wash dissolves it completely, and the pile lifts and brightens as it dries.
