Rug washing at the top of the Redcliffe Peninsula

Downsized homes, upgraded rugs

Scarborough holds the peninsula's northern tip, 3.3 square kilometres of crescent bays, red cliffs and named points with 9,178 residents at the 2021 census. The old fibro beach shacks have largely given way to two kinds of homes: low-maintenance brick from the retiree decades and newer apartments taking the bay views, and both run hard floors against the salt air. The households are the interesting part. Many arrived here by downsizing out of a big family home, keeping only the wool and Persian pieces that earned their place and letting the rest go. That selection process means Scarborough's rug population is better than its size suggests, and pieces chosen twice deserve washing that respects the choice: by hand, in full immersion, at our own facility.

Salt arrives on three winds here. It leaves in exactly one way, dissolved in a bath.

What water on three sides does to wool

Scarborough faces Moreton Bay to the east, Deception Bay to the west and open water to the north, so sea air reaches every room from every direction, every day of the year. The salt it carries settles into rug pile and works quietly: it pulls moisture from the air and holds it against the fibre, dulling colour, stiffening the hand of good wool and feeding must in the foundation. Sand comes indoors with it, a fine abrasive grinding at the base of the pile each time someone crosses the room, and between them the two shorten a rug's presentable life by years. Neither leaves under a vacuum, because neither lives at the surface. The immersion wash at Yatala dissolves the salt load and floats the grit up out of the foundation in a single process, and the controlled dry despatches it home genuinely dry, squared up to face the sea air on even terms again.

One run for the whole peninsula

The peninsula run is one of our longest-standing: Scarborough, Redcliffe, Newport, Margate and Kippa-Ring gathered on a single scheduled day, with pickup and delivery included in the arrangement. The driver rolls and carries each rug from the door, the van crosses the Ted Smout Bridge and takes the Gateway and M1 south, about 80 kilometres that cost you nothing and demand nothing of you. A week later the same run brings everything home, washed, dried through and groomed. Households booking several pieces come out ahead, since rug number two and beyond each collect $20 off, and neighbours at the point have a habit of coordinating pickups over the fence. The written re-wash guarantee travels with every piece: two days to raise anything at all, and the bath runs again for nothing.

Rug Cleaning Scarborough

The complete process for peninsula rugs runs start to finish under one roof: dry soil drawn out, the Yatala immersion, unhurried drying carried to the backing, then grooming for the run back over the bridge.

Homes near the harbour live with salt as a sitting tenant, and it moves back into rug pile within weeks of any surface clean. Only a wash at foundation level actually evicts it. The quote is fixed at inspection and stays fixed, however the wash itself unfolds.

  • Salt-country rugs a daily job for us
  • Figure fixed before washing starts
  • Seven-ish days, door to door

Rug Washing Scarborough

True immersion washing for wool, silk and hand knotted pieces: the whole piece goes below the surface, gets hand worked at the chemistry its fibre calls for, and is rinsed until the water runs honest.

The rugs that made the cut in a downsize are usually the best a household ever owned. Submersion is the method their makers assumed when they tied them: gentle on knots, thorough at the base, and after 29 years of it our hands can read the difference mid-wash.

  • The maker's intended method
  • Kind to knots and fringes
  • Thorough where it matters, the base
Most popular

Stain Removal

Coffee from the morning ritual, sunscreen walked in from the beach park, shiraz from the sunset balcony. Every mark is identified before any chemistry gets near the pile.

The wrong treatment fixes a stain in place for good, and older dyes will travel with it. We test hidden fibre first, then treat to suit what the test showed, and you get a candid reading upfront of what will lift versus what the piece has already absorbed into its story.

  • Chemistry after identification
  • Dye stability confirmed first
  • Candid readings, no promises

Pet Stain and Odour

The retirement companion dog earns endless forgiveness, but the rug still needs rescuing afterwards. Accidents drain to the foundation, well below the reach of anything kept in the laundry cupboard.

Treatment has to reach the depth of the problem or it is theatre. The bath flushes the rug's base out through the backing, enzymes finish the residue the water loosens, and drying to completion removes the moisture that humid peninsula weather would use to bring the smell home.

  • Depth-matched treatment
  • Enzymes complete the removal
  • Sea air revives nothing

Odour Removal

The stale, faintly sea-damp note a rug acquires after seasons of harbour air sits at the pile's base. No amount of sunshine on the balcony rail reaches down that far.

A rug is its room's quiet air filter and nobody ever empties one at home. The immersion dissolves years of what the sea air deposited, the rinse takes it all away, and the piece comes home smelling of nothing at all, which is exactly the standard we aim at.

  • Seasons of sea damp dissolved
  • Removed, never covered over
  • Nothing but clean wool on return

Rug Spot Cleaning

One recent accident on clean pile is often a local job needing no bath at all. We test the dye, lift the mark by careful degrees, and groom the spot back level with its surroundings.

Restraint protects pile; enthusiasm destroys it. Scrubbing spreads marks and crushes fibre that will never spring back, so we go slowly and pull up early, and when local treatment cannot safely complete a mark you hear the whole picture before deciding on the bigger job.

  • Local fixes where they suffice
  • Slow lifting, no scrubbing
  • The bigger call stays yours

Rug Steam Cleaning

Hot water extraction covers the machine made synthetics, the balcony runner and the grandkids' play rug: fast and effective where the build allows it, and declined without apology where it does not.

Steam is a fine servant and a poor master, excellent on synthetics and dangerous near hand knotted pieces. The assessment sorts your rug into the right lane before any method runs, and the reasoning is put in front of you rather than assumed on your behalf.

  • Fast work on synthetics
  • Refused where it would harm
  • Assessment sorts every piece

Rug Dry Cleaning

Low moisture compound cleaning exists for the rugs whose tests rule out water: unstable dyes, brittle old foundations, repairs from decades back that a bath would unravel.

Some treasured pieces tell us plainly they cannot swim, and the tests are how they say it. Dry cleaning works within those limits, sectioned and careful, by the crew that runs the bath, with evidence rather than habit picking the method. Every time, without exception.

  • For rugs that cannot take water
  • Sectioned, careful handwork
  • Tests decide, nothing else

Water Damage Restoration

A storm surge of rain, a failed hot water service, a window left open to a southerly change: what happens in the following days, not the soaking itself, decides the rug's future.

Peninsula humidity accelerates mould, so the response has to outrun it. Book straight away and tell us what the water did; assessment happens the same day the rug arrives, drying leads, washing follows, and a plain verdict arrives before any commitment does.

  • Outrunning the mould clock
  • Dried first, washed second
  • Verdict before commitment

Mould Rug Cleaning

The grey bloom on a rug from the storage cage, the must under furniture that never shifts: surface growth is only the dashboard light. The engine of the problem sits down in the base.

Wiping moves spores around and solves nothing worth solving. The antimicrobial soak clears the colony and everything it was living on, and a dry that finishes deep at the backing removes the standing moisture that let it start. Early is easy; late is harder but often still winnable.

  • The whole colony removed
  • Antimicrobial immersion pass
  • Standing damp eliminated

Rug Moth Treatment

Moth grubs love a quiet corner of good wool, and downsized homes full of kept treasures offer plenty of quiet corners. By the time holes show, the feeding is months old.

Our treatment ends the infestation at every life stage simultaneously, the wash then strips all trace of it from the wool, and the storage advice that accompanies the rug home protects everything else in the wardrobe from the next attempt.

  • Every stage ended at once
  • All trace stripped in the bath
  • The rest of the wool protected

Stain Protection

A clear post-wash finish slows absorption at the surface, letting a spill bead where it landed while the cloth is fetched, instead of sinking into the pile to stay.

On the one Persian that survived three house moves, the case for protection argues itself. The finish is invisible in use, changes nothing underfoot, and converts the next spilled coffee from a permanent mark into a thirty-second cleanup with a paper towel.

  • Applied when washing ends
  • Invisible in use
  • Spills become cleanups

Three point stories

The harbour, the beach and the 1878 gamble

The top of the peninsula has always backed itself.

Scarborough Boat Harbour

The peninsula's working harbour: trawlers, yachts and fish and chips.

Harbourside living pushes salt into every soft furnishing in the house. Our immersion wash removes it from the one that matters most, the rug, at a depth no home clean reaches.

Scarborough Beach Park and Queens Beach

Officially Queensland's friendliest beach, backed by 140 years of shoreline.

Beach-park households track in sand as well as salt, and sand grinds at a rug's base like fine abrasive. Washing it out of the foundation is precisely what our Yatala floor is built for.

The marine township of 1878

Auctioned as a seaside town in 1878, named after Yorkshire's great resort.

A suburb this long established holds long-serving rugs in long-held homes. Our honest assessment tells you which pieces justify a full hand wash, with 29 years of experience behind the answer.

Dog smell improved in Scarborough
They explained the odour treatment and collected it from Scarborough. The Chinese wool rug had been rolled up after a pet issue because we could not use it in the lounge. I was trying to avoid buying a replacement when the rug still had plenty of life in it. It is back under the coffee table instead of sitting in the garage. I noticed the difference most once the rug was back under normal daylight. The whole job was easier than trying to solve it at home.

Inspection stress reduced in Scarborough
The Turkish rug had pet smell, and I did not want it raised at inspection. They were honest about what would happen with the older mark. It looked clean and presentable for handover. The result made the Turkish rug easier to live with.

No more room odour in Scarborough
Our Chinese wool rug had a pet urine smell that kept coming back whenever the room warmed up. They were clear that old urine can be stubborn and did not promise magic. It is back under the coffee table instead of sitting in the garage. It is not perfect, but it is a fair result for an older rug.

Good to know

Scarborough questions we hear on the peninsula run

What might a Scarborough rug wash come to?

The piece prices itself on size, fibre and state, which is why the inspection comes before any figure. Once quoted, the number holds, the peninsula run covers both collection and return, and a rug that does not merit professional treatment is called out at assessment.

We downsized and kept two good rugs. Should they be washed before storage or use?

Before either, ideally. A move stirs up years of embedded grit, and storage locks whatever is present into the fibre. A full wash and complete dry resets both pieces, and the second rug on the booking is $20 off.

An ageing dog has started urinating on the wool rug. Will the smell actually leave?

Yes, because the treatment goes to the layer the urine actually occupies, the foundation. The bath drives it out through the backing and an enzyme stage neutralises the rest. Sprays fail precisely because they stop at the surface, and humid sea air keeps re-activating whatever they leave behind.

Do you collect from Redcliffe, Newport and Margate on the same day?

Yes, the whole peninsula shares one scheduled run from the point down. Neighbours often book together once they see our van in the street, and every additional rug on a booking earns $20 off.

Can the turnaround be quicker than the usual week?

There is: the 48-hour express, run at additional cost for genuine deadlines like settlements and family events. It moves through the identical wash and full drying as the standard service, simply at the front of the queue rather than in it.

Why does our rug feel sticky and look flat near the windows?

That is salt at work: it attracts moisture, mats the pile and dulls the colour, worst where sea air moves through. It cannot be vacuumed out because it is bonded into the fibre. An immersion wash dissolves it completely, and the pile lifts and brightens as it dries.
