Scarborough holds the peninsula's northern tip, 3.3 square kilometres of crescent bays, red cliffs and named points with 9,178 residents at the 2021 census. The old fibro beach shacks have largely given way to two kinds of homes: low-maintenance brick from the retiree decades and newer apartments taking the bay views, and both run hard floors against the salt air. The name borrowed the reputation of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, England's original seaside resort, and the ambition eventually caught up: the town stayed small until Scarborough State School opened on 9 March 1925 with 30 students, then grew into the settled bayside suburb it is today.
