The name commemorates the mango trees planted along a 700 metre section of Anzac Avenue, part of the avenue's commemorative plantings honouring First World War soldiers. Locals called the district Mango Hill by the 1950s, the name became official on 1 September 1980, and Anzac Avenue was heritage-listed on 5 February 2009 with the mango section among its treasures. Few boom suburbs can point at the living trees they are named for.
