Rug washing Ocean View, worth every one of the 92 kilometres
High-country homes keep high-mileage rugs
Ocean View is quiet range country, 39.5 square kilometres carrying 1,022 residents at the 2021 census, strung along Mount Mee Road where the land climbs from the Dayboro valley toward the plateau. The homes are high-country practical: homesteads, modern ranch-style builds and farmhouse renovations on big blocks, plus the cottages attached to the vineyard properties. Inside, the pattern repeats from one end of the locality to the other: open living areas, hard floors, a slow-combustion heater, and one large woollen rug doing the soft work for the whole room. These rugs run high mileage. Boots, dogs and paddock dust on the ordinary days, and the occasional city-standard dinner party when the cellar door crowd comes up the hill. A rug carrying that double life deserves the full treatment, and the full treatment is the only one we sell: immersion, by hand, at Yatala, with drying that actually finishes.
Distance is our problem, not yours. The run comes up the range regardless.
Vines, a one-teacher school, and a view that named a place
The locality's best-known address is Ocean View Estates at 2557 Mount Mee Road, established in 1998 by the Honnef and Irons families: around 100 acres of vineyards and bushland with a restaurant, cellar door and vineyard cottages, the reason city visitors now drive up through country most of Brisbane has never seen. The deeper story is older and smaller. Ocean View State School opened in April 1922 and taught the range's farm children for four decades until 1963, when better roads made the run down to Dayboro practical: forty-one years of a one-teacher school, the true measure of what this country was. And the name itself is the honest kind. From the high paddocks the land falls away eastward, and on a clear day the coastal plain and the bay sit on the horizon, exactly as advertised. Secluded is the point here. It has never meant unserviced.
Mist from above, dust from below
Height gives Ocean View cooler nights than the valley and a regular delivery of mist drifting down off Mount Mee, so rugs here live with persistent damp air on top of the summer humidity everyone in the region shares. Then the dry spells arrive and gravel drives and paddocks lift their fine dust into the house. Damp keeps the rug's foundation from ever properly drying; grit grinds at the pile base with every footfall. Together they are the fastest-ageing combination wool can face, and no vacuum interrupts it. The fix runs start to finish at Yatala: full immersion rinses grit and stored damp out from under the pile, and controlled drying gives back a rug dry right to its core, ready for the next round of mist instead of carrying the last one.

The longest run we love making
Ocean View is the far end of the Dayboro-district rural run, and it is collected like every other stop: batched to the schedule, window confirmed once the day is set, pickup and delivery free on the run.
Three markers of the high country
What Ocean View was, what it became, and the view that named it.
The winery on Mount Mee Road, vines and bush since 1998.
Wine country keeps good things well, and a quality wool rug rewards the same instinct. A proper hand wash every few years is what keeping it well looks like.
Ocean View Estates at 2557 Mount Mee Road has been the locality's best-known address since 1998, when the Honnef and Irons families established it: about 100 acres of vineyards and bushland with a restaurant, cellar door and vineyard cottages. It made Ocean View a destination, with city visitors driving up for lunch through country most of Brisbane has never seen, and alongside the small farms the vines are now part of what the locality is.
A one-teacher school for the range, 1922 to 1963.
Families up here have always weighed which services are worth the trip. Ours removes the question: the driver makes the climb, and everything else happens at Yatala.
Ocean View State School opened in April 1922 and served the scattered farm families of the range for four decades before closing in 1963, when better roads made the run down to Dayboro practical. Forty-one years of a one-teacher school is a fair measure of what this country was: dairy and fruit blocks, long walks to lessons, and a community small enough that the school was its main public building.
The high step between Dayboro and Mount Mee, named for what it sees.
Secluded does not mean unserviced. Ocean View homes get the same specialist wash as our city clients, scheduled around the rural run instead of the traffic.
Ocean View is the step between the Dayboro valley and the Mount Mee plateau, often described as the gateway to the range. The name is the honest kind: from the high paddocks along Mount Mee Road the country falls away eastward, and on a clear day the coastal plain and the bay sit on the horizon. The locality stayed quiet and secluded while the lowlands filled in, which is precisely why people choose it.

Ocean View rug questions, answered from experience
Do you genuinely collect from Ocean View, this far up?
Genuinely, and on a schedule. Ocean View is the far end of our Dayboro-district rural run: put the form in, roll the rug, and the driver climbs the range on the scheduled day. Pickup and delivery are free on that run, exactly as they are in the city.
What does it cost to wash a big homestead rug from up here?
The same way it costs anywhere else: what the rug happens to be, its size and its condition, all read at inspection, one figure set and then honoured. The kilometres do not appear on the invoice. If a rug is not worth the work, you hear that at assessment instead of a price.
One of the working dogs urinated on the wool by the fire. Recoverable?
Recoverable, provided the work goes deep enough. The urine sits in the foundation, so that is where the bath flushes, enzymes break the residue down at its source, and drying to the core removes what the mountain's damp air would otherwise keep reviving. Book it before the smell settles into a habit.
Our rooms stay damp with mist half the year. Will the rug come back dry?
Dry through the core, and that is a promise we keep deliberately. Controlled drying at Yatala carries the rug well past surface-dry before it travels, because sending damp wool back into mist country would undo the whole wash. It arrives ready for the climate, not defeated by it.
Can the vineyard cottage rugs go on the same booking as the house?
Ideal, in fact. Extra pieces at the one property ride along on the same stop, and $20 off comes off each rug after the first. Most Ocean View bookings send two or three pieces down the mountain together.
Which other localities does the rural run cover with us?
Dayboro, King Scrub, Rush Creek and the valley localities below the range all ride the same scheduled day. Neighbours can coordinate bookings onto one run, which is how most of the district already uses us.
