Acreage rugs do harder work than city rugs
Mount Samson is rolling farm and acreage country under the D'Aguilar Range, 18.4 square kilometres holding just 625 residents at the 2021 census, and the rugs out here earn their keep. Original farmhouses that watched the dairy decades come and go share the valley with modern acreage builds on the subdivided paddocks, and both run to the same interior logic: big living rooms, timber and tile underfoot, and one large wool rug taking the daily traffic of boots, dogs and everything a horse property walks inside. These are working rugs, often the largest single furnishing in the house, and they collect the valley a little more every week. Dust off the gravel drive, ash from the winter fire, paddock grit off every pair of boots: all of it settles below the pile where a vacuum cannot follow. A hand wash in full immersion is the one method that reaches that deep, which is why it is the only method we use.

A century of dairy, a name that means wind
The locality takes its name from the mountain standing over it, and the mountain's older name is the better one: Buran, also recorded as Boorun, meaning wind. Anyone who has stood in these paddocks when a front comes over the range knows the name was earned honestly. Dairy farming shaped the valley for most of a century, the paddock lines still show it, and the families who work this ground now hold the same practical standards the dairy years taught: look after good equipment and it lasts. We fit that thinking. Twenty-nine years of washing rugs one way, by hand, and a rural run that treats a farmhouse off Winn Road exactly like a city address: the driver collects it rolled from the gate, and pickup and return ride along free on the day we are through.
Fog in the cool months, dust in the dry ones
The valley sits in the range's weather shadow and takes its weather in turns. Storm season pushes humidity up the paddocks, the cool months lay fog along the flats, and every dry spell lifts fine dust off gravel roads and stock yards straight through the nearest open door. A rug living through that cycle holds damp in its foundation for half the year and grinds grit through its pile for the other half, which is the exact combination that ages wool early. The fix has two halves and both matter: the full immersion bath at Yatala clears grit and stored damp from deep in the weave, and controlled drying hands back a rug that is properly dry before it travels. It comes home ready for fog season, not carrying the last one.

The full valley service runs in four movements: dusting that knocks years of dry soil out of the pile, the Yatala immersion wash, drying pushed right through the foundation, and a careful groom. Only then does the rug ride the rural run home.
Acreage rugs carry more grit than any city piece we handle, and grit is what cuts wool at the base. Washing it out every few years costs a fraction of replacing the biggest furnishing in the room, and the figure named at inspection never moves afterwards.

Rug Washing Mount Samson
Full immersion is the method big wool was built for, and the only one our floor will use on it. The whole rug goes under, gets worked by hand at the pH the wool wants, and sits in the rinse until the water runs honest.
A valley rug spends its life between dogs, boots and the fireplace, and that service history settles well below the pile surface. Immersion cleans right through it without stressing the weave, which is why 29 years in we still trust nothing else with wool.

Stain Removal
Red mud off boots, coffee on a Sunday morning, the mystery mark the dog will not explain. Every stain gets identified before it gets treated, because wool punishes guesswork chemistry, and older dyes punish it twice as hard.
Dyes are tested first and the outcome forecast before work starts: what lifts entirely, what softens, what the rug will keep as a scar. Valley marks are usually organic in origin, and organic responds well once the treatment actually matches it.

Pet Stain and Odour
Working dogs and house dogs both claim the rug eventually, and their accidents sink past the pile into the backing within hours. Nothing in a spray bottle follows them that far down, which is why sprays keep disappointing this valley.
The bath does what the bottle cannot: it flushes the backing clean, enzymes break the residue down where it settled, and through-drying leaves humid weather nothing to reactivate. The smell goes because the cause went, not because something sweeter moved in.

Odour Removal
Wood heater seasons, wet dogs and closed winter rooms give a valley rug a scent library nobody chose. It settles low in the pile, below the reach of an open window, and it grows a little with every year the rug goes unwashed.
The full wash empties that library from the foundation, and the rinse water carries it away. What comes back up the valley smells of nothing whatever, which after a decade of wood smoke tends to arrive as a pleasant shock.

Rug Spot Cleaning
One fresh mark on an otherwise sound wool piece can sometimes be handled without the full bath: the dye tested, the spot lifted gently, the treated patch groomed back flush with its neighbours, all inside a day on the wash floor.
Scrubbing is how small marks become permanent ones, so leave the brush in the laundry and ring us instead. If a local treatment cannot close the job out safely, we say so plainly, and whether the rug goes for the full bath stays entirely your call.

Rug Steam Cleaning
Steam cleaning, meaning hot water extraction, stays on the synthetics out here: the mudroom runner, the kids' rug, the piece inside the back door that meets the paddock first. Quick, effective, and strictly limited to machine made construction.
Each rug is sized up before a method is picked, because steam anywhere near fine wool is how heirlooms get ruined. When a piece is sent to the bath rather than the wand, you hear the reason along with the quote.

Rug Dry Cleaning
Some rugs cannot swim: fugitive dyes, brittle old foundations, pieces that fail the water test outright. For those few, compound cleaning at low moisture does the work instead, applied by hand across the pile in patient, unhurried sections.
Testing decides it and nothing else does, because water cleans deeper and the bath remains our first preference. When immersion would genuinely risk a rug, the dry method works within safe limits, on the same floor and under the same eyes.

Water Damage Restoration
A tank overflow, a burst pipe, storm water across the back step: a soaked rug opens a race against mould at once, and the opening days decide the winner. Out here the water usually wins unless somebody moves quickly.

Mould Rug Cleaning
Valley fog and a stored rug are all mould needs to set up shop. The grey bloom on top is just the visible portion; the colony proper lives down in the foundation, feeding on whatever the pile has stored for it.
The antimicrobial immersion takes out the growth, the spores and the supply that feeds them, all in one pass, and drying the piece right through takes back the damp that made it welcome. Wiping the surface changes only the view, never the outcome.

Rug Moth Treatment
Moths choose the quiet corners of quiet houses: under the sideboard, the rolled spare in the shed, the wool nobody moves between March and November. The bald tracks show long after the feeding began, usually when the furniture finally shifts.
One treated pass through the bath ends egg, larva and adult together and carries the evidence away with them. The storage pointers we send home with it keep the household's remaining wool off next season's menu.

Stain Protection
A finishing treatment goes on after the wash finishes, built to slow absorption right down. The next spill waits at the surface where a towel can still claim it, instead of bonding with the fibre while you fetch one.
On a rug that lives with dogs, boots and firewood, protection is cheap insurance against expensive accidents. The wool's look and feel stay just as they were, and future incidents mostly end in a quick blot and a shrug.

Mount Samson takes its name from the peak standing over it on the D'Aguilar Range, and the mountain's Indigenous name is the older and better story: Buran, also recorded as Boorun, meaning wind. Stand in the valley when a front comes over the range and the name explains itself. The mountain gives the district its backdrop and its weather, and the farms and acreage blocks below arrange their days around both, as the dairy families did for most of a century before them.

An institution that adapts without leaving is our favourite kind. Twenty-nine years in, we still wash every rug the same way, by hand, and we still collect from this valley for free.
The school opened as Samson Creek Provisional School on 9 August 1880, became Samson Creek State School in 1909, then moved and took its current name in 1925. That is 145 years of continuous service to one farming valley, and the classrooms are busier now than the dairy era ever made them, with around 300 students drawn from the acreage families across the district.
The Samsonvale and Districts Public Hall actually stands in Mount Samson.
A hall kept standing by steady maintenance makes our argument for us. Wash a good wool rug properly every few years and it will outlast the sofa it sits beside.
The district's gathering place wears a neighbour's name but stands on Winn Road in Mount Samson: the Samsonvale and Districts Public Hall, survivor of the area's old community halls. It was renovated in 1995, when a new honour board added the district's Second World War service to its rolls, and it was significant enough for a formal conservation study in 2002. Dances, meetings, markets and elections: the hall has hosted a century of the valley's public life.

Mount Samson rug questions, answered straight
How is the price worked out for a Mount Samson rug?
The rug itself decides: size, fibre and condition write the figure, and the inspection makes it exact. Once quoted, it does not move. Pickup and delivery ride free on the rural run, and when a piece will not justify washing, we say so before anything starts.
A dog has urinated on the big wool rug. Can that be fixed properly?
Yes, because the repair happens at the right depth. Urine settles in the foundation, so that layer is flushed in the bath, the residue neutralised by enzymes at the source, and complete drying leaves humid weather nothing to wake up. Surface sprays only ever treat the top of the problem.
Do you collect from Samsonvale and Cedar Creek on the same day?
Same run, yes. One scheduled rural day covers Mount Samson along with Samsonvale, Cedar Creek, Closeburn and the Samford district, so neighbouring properties can book together, and every rug added to the first earns $20 off.
Our living room rug is enormous. Is it too big for you?
No. The Yatala floor was set up for exactly these pieces, and oversized wool is a normal week for us. The driver sorts the lift with you at the gate, the bath takes the rug whole, and the drying room carries it through the foundation before the trip home.
By spring the rug smells like the wood heater. Is that removable?
Completely. Smoke and ash compounds sink to the bottom of the pile where airing cannot follow, and the immersion wash dissolves them out of the foundation. The rug comes back with no smell to it at all, which is what clean actually smells like.
How does pickup work at the end of a long gravel drive?
Exactly as it does anywhere else: lodge the form, roll the rug up, and the driver still makes the trip to your door on the scheduled run. Gates, dogs and gravel are standard fare on the rural day, and your window is set once that day's list is drawn.
