Samford Valley is Brisbane's signature acreage belt: 20.5 square kilometres wrapping Samford Village on three sides, 3,208 residents at the 2021 census, and a housing stock of architect homes and renovated farmhouses on hectare-plus blocks, horse properties with more floats than sedans, sheds, pools and long verandahs. Split in 1981, one Samford in practice
Officially there are two Samfords. In 1981 the old Samford locality was divided into Samford Village, the compact town centre, and Samford Valley, the broad horseshoe of rural-residential country wrapping it to the west, north and east. The split simply described what was already true on the ground: the village holds the shops and the school, the valley holds the acreage, the horses and most of the people. Ask a local where they live and the answer is usually just Samford, the way it always has been. The South Pine River threads the width of the valley, the reason the floor is flat, fertile and settled, and the northern rim climbs to about 370 metres, walling the district into a world of its own. We treat the two Samfords as one run: the driver collects at the gate in either, and every rug ends up on the same wash floor.

The South Pine River enters Samford Valley from the range country toward Mount Nebo and runs the width of the locality before slipping out toward Draper. It is the reason the valley floor is flat, fertile and settled: the river built this ground, and the early timber and dairy properties lined themselves along it. After heavy rain it still reminds the valley whose floodplain the paddocks are, and on quiet mornings its crossings are where locals walk dogs and kids look for eels.
