A century-old grid, one block deep
Mermaid Beach is a strip of land 1.5 square kilometres wide holding 7,329 people, pressed between the Pacific and the Mermaid Waters canals with Broadbeach at one end and Miami at the other. The street pattern is not modern. Around 1924, seventy allotments went to auction as the Mermaid Beach Estate, and those survey lines still set the shape of every block behind the dune. What that means for us is a suburb with two rug populations living side by side. Original beach houses and walk-up units hold wool that has been in the same family for thirty or forty years. The rebuilt architectural homes toward the sand hold designer wool and silk sized for rooms that only exist since the renovation. Both sets of owners notice workmanship, which suits how we work. The wool tells us considerably more than the address does.

Held houses, rebuilt houses, the same salt line
The distance between a Mermaid Beach living room and open surf is measured in metres, not kilometres, and it does not change with the value of the house. Stain Removal
Sunscreen, salt water, ice cream and forty years of family life on the same piece of wool. The fibre is identified first, then the treatment is chosen to suit it.
Old marks and new marks behave differently, and a stain that has been in wool for a decade has usually changed chemically along the way. Testing settles the approach, and afterwards you are told whether this is removal or improvement. Nothing gets tried on a rug that would not come through it.

Pet Stain and Odour
Sandy paws through the back door, and a rug that has lived beside that door for years. It is the most common call we take off this grid by a distance.
Sprays hold a smell down for a few days and the humidity puts it back, because nothing applied at the surface reaches the layer that matters. Immersion clears that layer, an enzyme stage settles the source, and the drying room finishes it. On forty-year-old wool the dye is checked before any of it starts.

Rug Spot Cleaning
Sometimes the sensible answer is the small one. A single mark on wool still in good condition gets treated in place, and the room keeps its floor covering.
Judging when local treatment is enough takes more skill than the treatment itself does. Overworking widens the edge and ruins the face, permanently on viscose. So the touch is light, the area is groomed back, and the honest answer arrives whenever a full bath turns out to be the better call.

The common mistake is assuming the dearer method must be the better one. A machine-made rug given a slow bath gains nothing it did not have already. Extraction cleans it properly, returns it sooner and costs less, while the old wool on this grid gets the bath instead.

Water Damage Restoration

Recorded as named after HMS Mermaid, the cutter John Oxley sailed in 1823.
A name taken from a working boat suits a working suburb. Underneath the prestige this is still a place of families, dogs and sandy feet, and that is what the rugs here carry.
The name is recorded as coming from HMS Mermaid, the small cutter that carried surveyor John Oxley along this coast in 1823, the voyage on which he found the Tweed and the Brisbane rivers. The ship's name landed on this stretch of sand and stayed there, long before a single house stood behind the dune. It is one of the older names on the central Gold Coast, borrowed from a working survey vessel rather than invented for a brochure.

The suburb's streets date to a land sale. Around 1924, seventy allotments were advertised for auction as the Mermaid Beach Estate, and holiday and beach houses followed on the flat ground behind the dune. The grid filled through the decades after that and picked up stories on the way: American servicemen stationed here during the Second World War are recorded as calling the place Los Angeles Beach, and on 24 August 1975 Queensland's first McDonald's opened on the highway frontage. The estate lines of 1924 still shape every street.

Is it worth washing a wool rug we have had since the seventies?
Usually yes, and the reason is specific. Good wool dulls from grit at the foundation long before it wears out at the surface, so the colour is generally still there under the dirt. We inspect it first and tell you which of the two you have, and if the foundation has gone you hear that before anything is spent.
How is the price for a Mermaid Beach rug worked out?
From the rug itself: how big it is, what it is made of, and what condition it turns up in. The inspection therefore comes first and the figure comes second, and once set it does not move. Collection from the grid and the return trip are both part of the figure, so nothing is added at the end.

In most cases it can. Urine does not stay where it lands, it travels down and sits in the backing, which is why a spray fades and the smell arrives again with the next humid week. A full bath moves it out, enzymes deal with the source, and on old wool any colour damage is reported before work is agreed.
