Surfers Paradise fits 26,412 people into 6.2 square kilometres between the Coral Sea and the Nerang River, and the great majority of them live above the ground floor. That single fact shapes everything about rug care here. Floors are tile, stone or engineered timber wall to wall, so rugs do all the softening, all the sound absorbing and all the work. Where a Surfers rug actually goes

The rename, the developer and the first tower
A suburb that has rebuilt itself roughly every twenty years.
The suburb answered to Elston until the council changed the name on 1 December 1933.
A suburb that renamed itself for the customer understands marketing. We work the other end of that deal: inspect first, quote firmly, then do the work by hand at our own facility.
By 1889 the subdivisions around Meyer's hotel and its post receiving office were recorded as Elston, after the Lancashire home town of the Southport postmaster's wife. The replacement name started life as a sales pitch: a 1917 land auction promoted the Surfers' Paradise Estate, recorded as the first appearance of the name. Jim Cavill opened his Surfers Paradise Hotel in 1925, a two-storey timber place of sixteen rooms, and on 1 December 1933 the council officially renamed the suburb, recorded as judging Surfers Paradise the more marketable of the two. The hotel burnt in July 1936 and was rebuilt the following year. Cavill Avenue, recorded as one of the busiest shopping strips in Queensland, still runs through the middle of it.
Stanley Korman bought Cavill's hotel in 1957 and set the pace here for four years.
Booms and squeezes pass through this suburb on a cycle, and well-made rugs outlast every one of them. We are the slow end of that economy: hand washing, firm quotes, 29 years of it.
In September 1957 the Cavill family sold their hotel to developer Stanley Korman, and Surfers moved at his speed from then on. The first stage of his Chevron Hotel opened in 1958, an international-standard hotel two streets back from the beach, and his Paradise Island canal estate cut new waterfront into the river beside it. The federal credit squeeze of 1961 is recorded as ending Korman's run, with finance companies taking over the developments, but the direction he had set held. Surfers Paradise had become the address that put the Gold Coast on the national map, and the building never really stopped again.
Ten storeys in 1960, recorded as the first high-rise here, and heritage-listed today.

The skyline the world photographs started with one modest building. Kinkabool, built across 1959 and 1960 at 32 to 34 Hanlan Street, is recorded as the first high-rise in Surfers Paradise: ten storeys of holiday apartments when everything around it stood two. By 1971 another eleven apartment projects had finished, the tallest reaching twenty storeys, and the boom is recorded as peaking between 1979 and 1982. Kinkabool is on the Queensland Heritage Register now, a small survivor with the giants it started standing all around it.
