There is no home equivalent of what a bath does, and that is not a sales line, it is a matter of volume. A rug holds kilograms of material below the level anything domestic can reach, and only submerging it releases the lot at once. The rinse then carries it away. The bath runs at whatever strength the dyes and the foundation will take, tested first.

Cold months push animals onto one part of the floor and keep them there, so urine builds in a small section of the foundation over a season rather than spreading. There is no product that reaches that depth from above. Immersion takes the deposit out of the backing, enzyme work breaks down the odour compounds, and a controlled dry stops the smell returning with the warm weather.

An odour is chemically bound to the wool and not sitting on it, so hanging a rug out at 400 metres in a wet month is worse than useless. Washing breaks the bond and rinsing removes what has been freed. We add nothing scented at any stage, since a fragrance on top of an odour leaves a household with two smells to explain instead of one.

This is the job most often attempted here and most often overdone. Pressure crushes the wool beside the mark and drags its edge outward, so a small dark spot becomes a large pale one, which is a worse result by any measure. We test the fibre's response, apply the least that works, comb the surface back into its lay, and say clearly when the answer is immersion.

These pieces are designed for the process and they are back in position within hours, which is the practical reason to use it. On hand knotted wool the same process causes harm that appears years afterwards and cannot be reversed at that point. Village houses here hold plenty of older wool, and some of it will not take water at any temperature. The check on the reverse takes about a minute and is done before anything else happens. Where the answer rules out a bath, compound work in sections is what remains. It achieves less, and we say so, because a dye that has run cannot be recalled.

Escarpment water moves quickly and picks up soil the whole way down, so what reaches your floor is rarely clean even when it started out that way. Ring the day you find it and say what it crossed on the way. Stabilising and drying the rug comes before any opinion is offered, and the opinion itself is free.

With a national park on the western boundary and cloud coming across it regularly, nothing indoors here dries fully during a wet stretch, and that is precisely the condition growth needs. Treating the bath removes the colony and the deposit holding it. Rinsing takes both away. Then the drying room removes the moisture that started it, and skipping that stage means doing the job twice.

The requirement is stillness, and every village house has somewhere that qualifies. The claim is modest and we keep it that way: it delays absorption, it does not prevent it. A spill sitting on the surface for a short while is a spill a towel can still deal with, and past that window the finish contributes nothing.
