The shoulder where the district meets the range
Kureelpa covers thirteen point six square kilometres seven and a half kilometres west of Nambour, on the shoulder where the Nambour district stops being farmland and starts being range. Its neighbours run right across that divide: Gheerulla, Kiamba, Image Flat, Highworth, Mapleton, Dulong, Burnside and Perwillowen. Nine hundred and sixty eight people lived here at the 2021 census, up from nine hundred and seven in 2016. There is no shopping strip, no village square and no reason for one, since Nambour is close enough for anything anyone needs. What is here is acreage and rural residential blocks, a lot of them held a long time, and a name that has been carried without alteration for well over a century. That last part turns out to be the theme of the whole locality.

The households on this shoulder are not, on the whole, replacing furnishings every few years. Blocks are held for decades, houses are added to rather than knocked down, and the rugs inside them tend to have been bought once and kept. That produces a particular kind of work for us. A wool rug at twenty five years is usually structurally fine and cosmetically tired, which is the best possible combination, because a proper bath returns most of what age appears to have taken. One of the same age that has never been through a bath and has taken daily traffic is a different proposition entirely, because grit down among the knots has been cutting fibre the whole time. We tell people which of those two things they actually own, in plain terms and without hedging, before any work at all is quoted.
Living where the cloud actually sits
Sitting hard against the escarpment, Kureelpa catches the same lift in cloud and rainfall that Mapleton and Dulong do, and it adds valley damp off the tributary of the South Maroochy that the district's own dam holds back. The practical result indoors is that rooms take longer to dry out than people expect, and rugs on the shaded side of a house can stay marginally damp in their base for weeks at a stretch through the wet months. That is why we care as much about the drying stage as the washing stage. Water through the weave clears soil and odour, but it is the controlled room afterwards that decides whether a rug goes home genuinely dry or merely feels dry on the surface, and up here the difference matters within a season.

The reason we wash rather than surface clean is that soil settles downward through a pile until it reaches the knots, and once it is there it cuts fibre every time somebody walks over it. Water carries it back out. The bath strength follows what the dyes and the backing will take, established beforehand.

Stain Removal

Range soil is fine and heavily coloured, and it behaves less like a stain than like a dye that has been walked in. Testing establishes what the fibre and the existing colour will tolerate, treatment follows from that, and afterwards we give a straight account of what came out and what did not.

Pet Stain and Odour
Dogs that live half outdoors on acreage, a cat that came in wet, and a rug that took the consequences without complaint.
On a block this size an animal has a favourite room and a favourite corner of it, so deposits build in one place over months rather than spreading. Nothing applied to the surface reaches that depth. Only a bath reaches into the backing and brings the source up and out, enzymes then break the odour compounds apart, and a controlled dry finishes the work.

Odour Removal
Woodsmoke in winter, the mustiness of a room shut through a wet week, and the general damp note of living against a range.
Odour is not a layer sitting on wool, it is a substance chemically attached to it, which is why hanging a rug outside on the range achieves so little on a humid day. Washing releases what the smell is bonded to and the rinse removes it. We add nothing scented, because that only masks the problem.

Rug Spot Cleaning
A single recent mark on an otherwise sound piece is often better handled in the room than trucked down the range and back.
What ruins these jobs is enthusiasm. Working hard at a small area lifts the pile out of its lay and drives the edge of the mark outward, and the pale ring left behind is worse than what you started with. Testing comes first, then light work, then combing the lay back into place, and an honest word when only a bath will do it.

Rug Steam Cleaning
Hot water extraction, the right method for hardy synthetics: hall runners, machine-made pieces and mats at a back door.
Door mats and machine-made rugs are made to take this, and go back down the same day, which suits a house where the back door does the work of a front one. Use it on hand knotted wool and the harm surfaces years afterwards, long past the point of blaming anyone. Build determines method, and the choice gets explained to you before anything begins.

A blunt old name, a dam kept in service, and a school of fifty four
A range-edge district that has kept what works rather than starting over.
Kureelpa is reportedly derived from an Aboriginal name, Kuril-ba, meaning a place of rats and mice.
A name that describes the bush honestly instead of flattering it is close to how we like to describe a rug: what it is, what it needs, and what it will not get back.
It has carried unchanged through more than a century of settlement here, from the district's first provisional school in 1914 to the acreage blocks of today. Nobody at any point traded it for something more marketable, which for a locality this close to a tourist range says a good deal about the temperament of the place.
Poona Dam, an earth-fill embankment on a tributary of the South Maroochy River, was built in 1959, had its wall heightened in 1969 and its spillway upgraded in 1998.
Infrastructure maintained properly instead of run to failure is the standard we hold our own facility to, and it is the same argument for washing a good rug rather than waiting until it is past saving.
Three separate rounds of work spread across four decades have kept it supplying water storage for the Sunshine Coast region well beyond what its original build anticipated. Is it worth washing a rug we have had for twenty five years?
Usually yes, and that is the most common question we get up here. Wool kept reasonably dry has a great deal left in it at that age. The inspection gives you both halves of the answer: what a proper bath brings back, and what twenty five years of daily traffic has taken permanently.
How do you work out the price for a Kureelpa rug?
By looking at it. Nothing about the address changes the number, only the rug does: its construction, its size and how it has held up. Getting it down the range and back is already covered. The figure lands at inspection and there is no adjustment later. If washing will not repay what it costs, that is what we tell you.
Do you actually drive up the range for a single rug?
Yes. The corridor run comes through here on its scheduled day whether there is one rug waiting or six. A single piece from an acreage block is an ordinary collection, and the distance never appears as a line on your quote.
Our dog has urinated on the same spot for months. Is the rug finished?
Not necessarily, though it needs looking at soon. Repeated urine concentrates in the foundation, which is why sprays do nothing lasting. Immersion carries the deposit out, enzymes settle what causes the smell, and we tell you honestly at the assessment if the colour has been damaged underneath.
Do you also collect from Dulong, Highworth and Image Flat?
Those three run with us, so do Burnside, Gheerulla and Nambour, all on the one corridor day. Acreage roads up here mean a single stop often covers two properties. Send them together and each rug beyond the first has $20 off applied to it.
There is a musty smell in the room but the rug looks fine. Should we worry?
Worth checking. Lift a corner and smell the underside rather than the face. Up here, damp holds in the base of a pile long after the room feels dry, and a smell there is often the first sign of growth starting. Caught at that stage a wash resolves it completely.
