An honest answer first, then a figure that stands up
Plenty of the rugs we see here have been in the one family for thirty or forty years, and the owner already suspects the worst. Usually they are wrong, and we can show them why on the reverse. Where they are right, we say so and stop there.

Rug washing Hastings Point, an hour and a quarter down the coast
Dunes that only changed where somebody was measuring
Aerial survey photography taken between 1947 and 1962 recorded foredunes at Hastings Point standing as high as sixteen metres. By 1977 the same dunes measured six to nine. That is a substantial change in a single working lifetime, and the only reason anybody can state it with confidence is that the coast here has been photographed and measured for eighty years. It is ordinary, well documented beach geography, tracked across three decades of survey work rather than tied to any one occasion, and it is the same slow reshaping seen up and down this part of the Tweed Coast. We mention it because it is the clearest single illustration of how much salt and sand actually moves through the air here. A rug sitting in a lounge room three streets back is living in that same moving air, taking a little of it in every week, and nobody notices until the handle has gone stiff and the colour has flattened.
Change that happens slowly enough still counts. It just needs somebody to have written the numbers down.
A creek mouth, a reef, and the houses behind them
Cudgera Creek meets the ocean at Hastings Point, and the village is built around that meeting. The wide reef platform holds tide pools that support a genuine range of marine life, including the critically endangered beach stone-curlew, and the creek mouth has long been a family spot for canoeing, fishing and swimming, with creek access, a playground and picnic facilities on the Hastings Point side. Behind all that sit the houses, older beach places alongside newer coastal builds, occupied by a population with a median age of sixty seven, thirty years above the national figure. That is not a statistic we quote for its own sake. It tells us what tends to be on the floors. People who have stayed in one house for decades own rugs that came with them and have been kept, not replaced, and those are precisely the pieces where a proper wash returns the most value and a careless one does the most harm.
The long leg north, and why the trip is worth making
Hastings Point is between ninety eight and one hundred and two kilometres from our facility, around seventy five minutes with the Tweed Coast road and then the M1. It is one of the longer legs we drive and it is entirely our cost. The reason it is worth driving is straightforward enough: washing a rug is the easy half of the work, and drying it properly is the half that decides whether the odour and the growth stay gone. In air this close to the water, with a creek at the end of the street, a wool rug will not dry through to its base in any reasonable time. It will dry on top and stay damp underneath, which is exactly the condition that causes the problem in the first place. A controlled drying room a hundred kilometres away solves that. Nothing in the room does.

Premier Rug Cleaning and Washing - Northern NSW
The listing sets out the country we drive rather than an office you would ever need to find. Collection happens at the house, and the rug is in our own hands from the doorstep onward.
The long leg north
This is one of the longer legs we drive, and the distance stays our problem. Hastings Point goes on the same day as Cudgera Creek.
Dunes that shrank on camera, a reef that shelters a rare bird, and a village that stays put
A settled coastal community where the record goes back further than the houses.
Aerial photography between 1947 and 1962 recorded foredunes here up to sixteen metres high. By 1977 the same dunes had reduced to between six and nine metres.
A coastline studied this closely tells us plainly how much salt and sand moves through here, which is exactly the detail that shapes how we treat a rug from one of these houses.
That kind of long-run change is ordinary, well documented coastal geography, tracked over three decades of survey photography rather than any single occasion, and it is part of the same slow reshaping seen along this whole stretch of the Tweed Coast.
Cudgera Creek meets the ocean at Hastings Point, and the village's wide reef platform holds tide pools that provide habitat for marine life including the critically endangered beach stone-curlew.
A village built around a working creek mouth and a reef this alive is real coastal character, and we like knowing the ground before we knock on a door.
The creek mouth has long been a family destination as well, used for canoeing, fishing and swimming, with creek access, a playground and picnic facilities on the Hastings Point side.
The population grew from 582 in 2011 to 661 in 2021, with a median age of sixty seven, thirty years above the national figure, making this one of the most settled communities on the whole coastal run.
A community this settled usually holds rugs that have never left the family, and those deserve the same careful hand wash we give any heritage piece.
That settled character, long-term residents who chose this stretch of coast decades ago and stayed, is exactly the profile behind the wool and heirloom pieces our facility washes most often from villages like this.

Hastings Point questions, answered plainly
The rug has been in this house since the 1980s. Is it worth washing?
Nearly always, and the age itself is not the deciding factor. What matters is whether the foundation still holds tension. If it does, decades of salt and fine sand come out and the rug looks like itself again. If it does not, we say so and recommend against spending the money.
Is Hastings Point too far out for you to collect from?
No. It sits on the southern coast run at between ninety eight and one hundred and two kilometres from our facility, and that run goes on its scheduled day regardless of how many rugs are waiting. The drive is at our cost and it does not appear on your quote.
The smell keeps coming back after a few weeks. Why?
Because whatever caused it is still in the base of the rug and the damp air here keeps reactivating it. Surface treatment removes the smell temporarily without removing the source. Immersion takes the source out and a controlled drying room removes the moisture that lets it repeat, which is what makes it stay gone.
There is a spot where the dog has urinated repeatedly. Is that recoverable?
Usually yes. The urine has soaked into the foundation and every repeat has added to the deposit already sitting there. A full bath reaches that layer and carries it out, enzyme treatment breaks down the compounds behind the odour, and controlled drying stops it returning when the humidity comes up. Dye damage underneath is shown to you at the assessment.
Do you pick up from Cudgera Creek and Pottsville as well?
Yes, and from Bogangar, Round Mountain and Cabarita Beach on the same southern day, with Mooball and Burringbar behind them. Distance being what it is, several houses sending at once helps everybody, and $20 off comes away from each piece past the first.
How long will the rug be away?
About seven days from collection to delivery. Both trips ride on scheduled run days rather than being made as separate journeys, which is what keeps the turnaround the same here as anywhere else. A 48 hour express option is available at additional cost.
