Living between surf and a lake gives a rug two problems at once. From the east comes salt and sand, abrasive and persistent. From the west comes still-water humidity that stops a pile ever drying out. Each makes the other worse. The inspection works out which is doing more damage, because the answer changes what the bath has to do.

Newer coastal stock runs to hard floors and one or two very good rugs rather than several ordinary ones, which raises the stakes on method. A good rug repays immersion, since water is the only thing reaching through a whole pile. It also punishes the wrong process badly. Both facts are settled before the bath fills, not discovered while the rug is in it.

Marks on this coast tend to be a combination rather than a single substance, usually oil plus salt plus whatever was in the glass. Combinations need sequencing: break the oily component first, flush the soluble part second, and treat the residue last. Reverse that order and you fix the part you can see while setting the part you cannot. Testing establishes the sequence, and afterwards we report exactly what remained.

Wet animals are the specific problem here rather than accidents, because a dog that swims twice a day never fully dries and neither does whatever it lies on. Constant damp in one area does two things: it holds odour that would otherwise disperse and it lets anything else in the pile ferment. A full bath resets the whole rug, enzymes deal with what is actually smelling, and drying under control finishes it.

Odour holds to wool by chemical attachment, so ventilating a coastal house does very little, especially when the incoming air is humid and carrying salt. The bath breaks that attachment and the rinse takes off what is freed. We put nothing perfumed near a rug at any stage, because covering a smell rather than removing it means the room carries two, and the cover fades before the cause does.

The failure at home is force, not chemicals. A stiff brush flattens wool and drives colour outward, so the treated area ends up lighter and larger than the spot was, permanently rather than for a while. On site we work inside what the pile tolerates, lay the surface back down the way it grew, and say plainly when the honest answer is a bath.

Coastal houses accumulate these because they suit covered decks and high-traffic entries, and the method is exactly what they were built for. They dry fast and go back down the same day. Hand-knotted wool put through the same process suffers damage that appears years later, well past the point of blaming anything. We identify each piece before it leaves and say which treatment it is getting.

Compound does something quite specific and it is worth being clear. Powder is worked into the upper pile, it binds surface soil, and it is drawn back out carrying that soil. What it does not do is reach the base or the foundation. So it is right only where water is genuinely out of the question, and we say which case applies rather than letting anyone assume.

An unattended house makes this worse on a holiday coast, since water has time to stand rather than being caught within the hour. Standing time counts as much as source: what it was and how long it sat are what we need on the phone. Drying and stabilising happen before any assessment, and that assessment carries no charge.

Still water inland and humid sea air leave little dry margin, and a rug that never gets lifted has none. The bath ends what is growing, rinsing carries off the residue underneath, and the drying room deals with the water the whole thing depended on. Put a damp rug back on the same spot and you have delayed the problem by a season.

A house on a holiday cycle is quiet and dark for long stretches, which is precisely the condition moths need to work through a full life cycle undisturbed. One treated bath ends every stage together rather than clearing the adults and leaving eggs behind in the foundation. Damaged fibre leaves with the rinse, and only then can the loss be described accurately rather than estimated.
