Sinnamon Park covers 3.0 square kilometres about 14 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD toward the southwest, one of the Centenary suburbs on the corridor's river side. The Brisbane River bounds the north, the green strip of Jindalee Creek runs the eastern edge and the Western Freeway draws the western line. The suburb was cut from Seventeen Mile Rocks and named on 13 May 1989. The 2021 census counted 6,590 people. The streets are 1990s and 2000s family homes, landscaped and well kept, with a run of the corridor's better renovations among them, and the large Sinnamon Village retirement community occupies the old farm ground. Those two populations bring us two entirely different kinds of work.

What actually happens to a large rug in a smaller room
Downsizing produces the same conversation over and over in this suburb. A household leaves a big house, keeps the two or three rugs it likes most, and then finds that a piece bought for a formal dining room is simply larger than the new living area. There are three things people do at that point and all of them cause harm. The most common is turning the excess under along one edge, which crushes the pile flat in a straight line and holds the foundation at an angle every day it sits there. Our alternative suggestion asks nothing of you but a decision: if a rug is larger than its room, have the surplus stored flat somewhere else in the house or accept that the piece wants a different room, and never leave the same edge turned under year after year.

James Sinnamon, a farmer from County Armagh born in 1813, brought his wife Margaret, seven sons and three daughters to Brisbane in 1863, emigrating for a better living and the freedom to worship as they chose. In 1865 the family bought their first land here on the river's Mermaid Reach, cleared the scrub and farmed it, and their name held on this ground for more than a century before the suburb took it officially in 1989.
The heritage-listed Sinnamon Farm keeps the houses the family built from 1869.
A suburb that kept its 1869 farmhouse keeps its good rugs too, and the pieces arriving from the village next door are among the best cared for anywhere on the run.
Sinnamon Farm, on Seventeen Mile Rocks Road, joined the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992 as a rare surviving picture of the river's scrub-farming era. Beechwood, the gabled farmhouse of 1869, stands with Avondale from the 1890s, and the district's little 1877 school building is preserved on the farm alongside them. The Sinnamon Village retirement community, begun as a Methodist project in 1977, now occupies the family's old paddocks next door.
The little 1888 church seats sixty people on twelve pine pews, and it is still here.
Something that small, kept that carefully, for that long, is the standard we aim at with every rug. Maintain a good thing properly and it simply keeps serving.
The district's first chapel went up in bark and shingle in 1880, and in 1888 Wilson Henry, a local resident and cousin of the Sinnamons, built the small timber church that replaced it. Intended for the Church of England, it was taken up by the Methodists when no Anglican clergyman could be found, and the family filled most of its positions for generations. It seats about sixty on twelve pine pews and keeps its kerosene lamps and cedar pulpit, and the Queensland Heritage Register listed it in October 1992.

Our rug is too big for the new living room and we have folded one edge under. Is that a problem?
It is, and it is the most common avoidable damage we see here. A folded edge crushes the pile along a straight line and puts a permanent bend through the foundation, and after a few years neither will fully brush out. A wash releases much of the crushing but not a set that old. Better to store the excess flat elsewhere in the house, or to move the rug to a room it fits.

If it has been affected, all stages of the cycle can be treated and the casings wash out in the bath, and you will be shown honestly how much has gone.
