We work out what it is before we work out what it costs
Getting the identification right is most of this job. Two rugs the same size and colour can want completely different treatment once you know how they were made, and guessing is how rugs get ruined. We identify first, price second, and the price we give you is the price you pay.

Rug washing Duranbah, an hour and a bit from the wash floor
Which Duranbah, and why we always ask
There are two places on the Tweed carrying this name and they are about fifteen kilometres apart. One is Duranbah Beach at the mouth of the Tweed River, known to surfers as D-Bah and officially recorded as Flagstaff Beach. The other is this one: a rural farming locality twenty one kilometres south of Tweed Heads and fifteen kilometres east of Murwillumbah, on red volcanic soil, with working farms and quiet acreage blocks instead of a surf break. Locals know the difference without thinking about it. Search engines and delivery drivers frequently do not, and neither do people booking a service over the phone from interstate. So we ask, every time, and we would rather ask a question that sounds obvious than send a van fifteen kilometres in the wrong direction. It is the same instinct that makes us check a rug's construction before choosing a method instead of assuming.
Asking an obvious question costs nothing. Assuming the answer costs somebody a wasted morning, or a ruined rug.
Red soil, working farms, and what that does to a floor
The ground here is some of the most fertile in the district, which is exactly why it is farmed and exactly why it is a problem indoors. Volcanic red soil is fine-grained. It comes in on boots, on the wind, on a dog, and it does not sit politely on the surface of a rug waiting to be vacuumed up. It travels down through the pile to the knot line where a vacuum head has no useful effect at all, and it carries pigment, so it dulls the colour as well as abrading the fibre. Farmhouse rugs from this country arrive with a load in the base that the owner has usually mistaken for wear, and they leave looking like a different rug. That is not a sales line, it is just what happens when you take out ten or twenty years of soil that no amount of surface work was ever going to reach. The population here has eased from 401 in 2006 to 226 in 2021, which we will state as it is rather than dress up, and it means a smaller number of houses holding rugs that have generally been in place a long time.
Damp between the coast and the caldera
Sitting inland of the beaches and short of the deeper valley, Duranbah gets damp air from both directions and holds it. Here is the part worth being blunt about: getting soil and smell out of a rug is not a difficult trick, and plenty of operators can do it in your lounge room. The difficult part is what comes next. A rug that is not dried right through will hand the smell back inside a month, and no farmhouse in February can dry one right through. That single limitation is the entire argument for the rug leaving the property, riding out with the driver, and coming back roughly a week on.

That listing covers the area we work rather than a building with a counter in it. The driver comes out to the property, and the rug stays with our own people until it is back at your door.
Off the farm and up the highway
Duranbah goes on the same day as Cudgen and the Murwillumbah pickups, and there is no charge for the collection itself on that run.
A count going down, a name shared with the coast, and eight neighbours on the boundary
Quiet farming country that is easy to confuse with somewhere else, so we will be precise.
The population has moved from 401 at the 2006 census to 262 in 2011, 239 in 2016 and 226 in 2021, a genuine and gradual decline stated here as it is rather than dressed up.
Fewer households simply means fewer rugs, not lighter work on the ones there are. Each gets the full reading, farmhouse wool or a recent purchase alike.
At that scale Duranbah stays properly rural, working farms and acreage blocks rather than a fresh subdivision, the sort of place where a slow change in numbers reflects farm amalgamation and generational turnover rather than any one dramatic cause.
This Duranbah shares its name with Duranbah Beach, the well known surf break at the mouth of the Tweed River, and the two are genuinely different places about fifteen kilometres from each other.
Two places, one name, and a van that has to arrive at the right one. We ask which Duranbah before anybody drives anywhere, and we take the same trouble over which rug is whose.
The beach, known locally as D-Bah, is officially Flagstaff Beach and sits on the coast. This Duranbah is inland farming country east of Murwillumbah. Locals never confuse them, but the shared name is worth stating plainly rather than leaving a search engine or a customer to work it out.
Duranbah borders eight other localities: Tumbulgum, Stotts Creek, Cudgen, Eviron, Kings Forest, Farrants Hill, Tanglewood and Cabarita Beach, a genuine crossroads of small Tweed names between the coast and the valley.
Farmland this well connected to places we already collect from is exactly the sort of settled crossroads we know well before we ever pull into a Duranbah driveway.
Sitting between the beach towns and the farming country behind them puts this locality on the natural line of travel for the run we already make through this part of the Tweed, several of those neighbours included.

Duranbah questions, answered precisely
Are you talking about the beach or the farming locality?
The farming locality, inland and east of Murwillumbah. The surf break of the same name is about fifteen kilometres away at the mouth of the Tweed. We confirm which one you mean when you book, because both are in our service area and the runs are on different days.
The rug is stained red right through. Is that permanent?
Often not. Red soil carries pigment and it packs into the foundation where vacuuming cannot touch it, so it reads as staining when a lot of it is simply a heavy load of soil. A full immersion wash floats it out. Where it has genuinely bonded to the fibre we will say so at the assessment.
We are out on a farm road. Will you actually come?
Yes. The valley run comes through this country on its scheduled day regardless of how many rugs are waiting, and the driver comes to the property rather than asking you to meet him. The distance is our cost and it does not appear on the quote.
There is a patch of dried dog urine that has been in the rug a long time. What can be done?
In most cases it can be dealt with, and sooner is better because each repeat has added to the quantity already held in the foundation. A bath reaches that depth and floats the deposit clear, enzyme treatment dismantles the compounds behind the odour, and drying under control keeps the smell from returning once the weather warms.
Do you collect from Cudgen and Eviron on the same day?
Yes, along with Stotts Creek, Tumbulgum and Kings Forest as the run works through this stretch. When two or three properties on the one road send at once the whole day runs smoother, and $20 off applies to each rug beyond the first.
How is the price decided?
From the rug alone. Size, construction, fibre and condition are the only inputs. Neither the address nor the drive affects the figure, because collection and delivery are part of what we do rather than an extra. The number is set at inspection and does not change afterwards.
