A firm number for a very large rug

Replacing an oversized wool rug is a serious purchase. Washing one is not, and that gap is the entire argument. Whatever number comes back after the inspection is the number on the invoice, with no adjustments once work has started.

Fifteen square kilometres of river country

Rug washing Karalee households put off because of size

Blocks measured in thousands of square metres

Karalee is rural-residential country 8.9 kilometres northeast of the Ipswich centre and 38 kilometres from Brisbane, spread across 15.6 square kilometres and running about six kilometres north to south. The 2021 census counted 5,521 residents. Blocks here were kept deliberately large from the beginning, mostly two thousand square metres and up, and the housing followed suit: brick and timber homes set well back behind lawns, sheds instead of garages, and room at the side for a horse. Rooms built at that scale get furnished at that scale. Households here buy their rugs oversized, wool where the budget allowed and hard-wearing synthetics through the family areas, and the result is a floor covering nobody can lift into a car boot or carry out to a hose. That is exactly the piece our collection run exists for.

An oversized rug is not a bigger version of a small one. It is a different job from the moment it leaves the floor.

River air on the boundary, paddock dust in the middle

The Brisbane River wraps the northern and eastern edge of this locality and the Bremer runs along part of the southern one, and both keep humid air sitting over the low ground well into the morning. Warm months load rug pile with that damp in rooms that stay closed against the heat. Then the dry stretch arrives, Ipswich temperatures do what they do, and paddock dust travels indoors on boots and paws and the afternoon breeze. Across a year the two build up together in the bottom third of the pile, which is the one part of a rug that never sees a vacuum head. Immersion reaches it. Every rug is then dried right through in the controlled room at Yatala, because sending a heavy wool piece home with damp still in its foundation would undo the entire exercise.

The long driveway is where the job actually starts

We will not pretend Karalee is close. It is roughly 55 kilometres to the wash floor and usually 45 to 50 minutes, out along Mount Crosby Road to the Warrego and then motorway to the Yatala exit. That makes it one of our longer Brisbane-side runs and we would rather say so than dress it up. Pickups here go onto a scheduled day, and the collection and the return are both covered on it. The driver comes to the door and takes the rug rolled, however far back the house sits, which matters more here than most places: the piece is usually too heavy for one person and too long for any car. Karalee and Barellan Point share the same day, so neighbouring bookings group together well.

Oversized rugs are our ordinary week

Brick and timber homes set well back on lawns, sheds, paddocks and long driveways. The rug is read on arrival at the floor, and the figure follows the reading rather than the other way round.

Showing all 12 services

Rug Cleaning Karalee

One rug, one continuous job. Dry grit is pulled out before any water is introduced, the rug then spends its time in the Yatala tubs, and it is brought back to bone dry before the pile is set.

A rug that covers most of a living area holds more soil than three small ones put together, and almost none of it shows. Weight is the honest measure out here, and weight is what comes off. You are quoted after the rug has been looked over properly, and the quote does not move afterwards.

  • Built for oversized pieces
  • Looked over, then quoted
  • Bone dry before it ships

Rug Washing Karalee

Total immersion. The whole rug is submerged, hand worked with a solution suited to its fibre, and rinsed until nothing further will lift out of it.

Nobody washes a four by three metre wool rug in a driveway, and nobody should try. It needs drainage under it, a room that can dry it and enough people to shift it while it is heavy. That has been the arrangement here for 29 years, and it is why your rug leaves the property.

  • Submerged, not surface treated
  • Solution matched to the fibre
  • Rinsed until nothing lifts
Most popular

Stain Removal

Mud off the paddock, diesel from a work boot, a glass gone over at lunch. The material of the rug is established first, because on a piece this size a mistake is expensive to undo.

Ground-in minerals and spilled food need opposite treatments, and applied the wrong way round the mark becomes permanent. A trial area out of sight settles which is which. You then get a straight list: these ones go completely, these ones lighten and stop there.

  • Minerals and food differ
  • A trial area settles it
  • A straight list either way

Pet Stain and Odour

Dogs that work outside sleep inside, and sooner or later something goes wrong on the biggest rug in the house. Whatever lands on it keeps moving until it reaches the backing.

Bottled treatments reach a fraction of that depth, which is why a room clears for a few weeks and then does not. Submerged, the residue has an exit and takes it. Enzymes finish the job, and once the moisture is gone the result stays put.

  • It moves to the backing
  • Submerged, it has an exit
  • No moisture, stays finished

Odour Removal

Sheds, animals, boots and a house closed against a cold snap each contribute something. Wool takes the lot without protest and hands it over on the first warm afternoon.

The smell is a deposit inside the yarn, not something floating past your nose, so fresh air does nothing measurable about it. Dissolving it and carrying it off the property is the only route, and that is what a bath followed by rinsing achieves. No perfume goes on top.

  • A deposit inside the yarn
  • Carried off the property
  • No perfume goes on top

Rug Spot Cleaning

Used when a single area has been spoiled. The dye gets checked, the mark is drawn up gradually, and the pile is brushed back so the join disappears.

On a heavy rug the temptation is to bear down on it, and that is what does the lasting harm. Weight spreads the mark outward and crushes the yarn flat, and crushed yarn does not stand back up. Where a local repair will not do it, you hear that first.

  • Worked up over passes
  • Crushed yarn stays crushed
  • You hear that first

Rug Steam Cleaning

Hot water extraction, which is the right call on machine made pieces: the mat inside the laundry door, the games room synthetic, the tough rug in the mud entry.

When the build suits it, this is faster and the bill is smaller, and you will be told that rather than steered past it. Hand-made wool belongs in the tubs. What the rug is made of decides the route, and a change of route always arrives with its reason.

  • The right call on machine mades
  • Faster, and the bill is smaller
  • The rug decides the route

Rug Dry Cleaning

The alternative when a rug fails its water test. A compound goes in among the fibres by hand, binds the soil that has settled there, and is then removed again completely dry.

Unstable dye and a backing that has hardened with age both rule immersion out. Those are boundaries, not faults, and a professional works inside them. Pushing past a boundary to prove a point costs somebody a rug that cannot be bought again.

  • When water is ruled out
  • Worked in, lifted out
  • Boundaries, not faults

Water Damage Restoration

A trough line at the house, a pump left running, a hose that gave up behind the machine. Everything then depends on what happens immediately afterwards.

Wet wool at summer temperature is growing mould inside a few days, so this gets measured in hours. Phone it through straight away, and let us know roughly how long it was sitting. It gets assessed the day it lands, and you have an answer before agreeing to anything.

  • This is measured in hours
  • Say how long it sat
  • An answer before you agree

Mould Rug Cleaning

Bloom across a rug that came out of the shed after a damp run of weeks, and a stale edge where it has met a cold floor. The surface tells you little.

It roots into the backing, so treating what you can see accomplishes little and pushes spores through the room in the process. An antimicrobial bath strips the organism and its food source together, and a rug returned with no moisture in it offers nothing for a second round.

  • The visible part is a minority
  • Organism and food source
  • Nothing for a second round

Rug Moth Treatment

Wool, dark and stillness are the only three things a grub requires, and a property with sheds and unused rooms hands over all three. A season passes before anyone lifts a corner.

One treatment breaks the life cycle at each stage, and the debris is carried away with the wash water. Advice on storing wool travels back with the delivery. Where grubs have gone right through, the hole is pointed out to you rather than tucked away.

  • Broken at each stage
  • Debris leaves in the water
  • The hole is pointed out

Stain Protection

The final optional step, once everything else is done and the rug is dry. Spills then sit on top for a few seconds instead of soaking straight in.

Between a back door and a dining table, a few seconds is the margin between a cloth and a callout. It changes nothing you can feel or see, so the colour, the texture and the way the pile lies stay as they were, and one early catch usually pays for it.

  • An optional finish
  • Nothing you can feel or see
  • One spill pays for it

Adelaide Street takes the enquiries and holds the records. Not one rug is washed there. That happens at Yatala.

Where a Karalee rug spends its week

Rolled at the driveway, bathed at YatalaThe rug goes out rolled from the acreage and is worked in the tubs at Unit 9/38 Computer Rd, Yatala QLD 4207.
About 55 kilometres, 45 to 50 minutesMount Crosby Road out to the Warrego, then motorway all the way through to the Yatala exit.

Karalee is picked up on a scheduled acreage day. Collection and return are both covered on that run, and the window comes back to you once the day is filled in.

Three Karalee records

A name kept two ways, dairy blocks and a school worth waiting for

Country that turned into homes without giving up the space.

A name kept two ways

The Ugarapul name is recorded with two gentle meanings.

Either reading describes country somebody thought was worth looking after. The rugs in these houses were bought on the same principle, and they reward it.

Dairy paddocks into house blocks

Farm holdings began selling for housing in the late 1960s.

Large blocks produced large rooms and large rooms take large rugs. Those are the pieces our wash floor was built around, and the driver takes them rolled from the door.

The school worth waiting for

Karalee State School opened on 25 January 1985 with 186 pupils.

A district that waited years for its own school understands the value of a service that actually comes out to you. Ours does: booked pickup, hand wash at Yatala, delivery back to the door.

Good to know

Karalee questions about big rugs and long drives

Our rug is enormous. Is there a size you will not take?

Very few. Oversized wool and synthetic pieces are the ordinary week here, and the wash floor was set up around exactly that: room to lay a rug flat, drainage under it and enough hands to move it while it is wet and heavy. Tell us the rough dimensions when you book so the right vehicle comes out, and the driver handles the lifting at your end.

What does a rug wash cost in Karalee?

Size does a lot of the work here, but not all of it: the fibre, the construction and how much the rug is carrying matter just as much. Because of that, nothing gets priced sight unseen. The rug is read on our floor and a single figure comes back to you, with the travel already covered by the scheduled day. If it is not worth washing, you get told that instead of a quote.

How long will I wait for a pickup out here?

Longer than a suburban booking. Karalee is collected on a planned acreage day, not a daily route, so your rug joins the next run out this way rather than going out tomorrow. Once the day is locked in you get the window. Both legs are covered on it, and the driver comes down to the house rather than meeting you at the road.

The dog urinated on the big lounge rug. Is that recoverable?

In most cases it is, provided the treatment gets as far down as the accident did. On a rug this size urine spreads through the backing before anybody finds it, so anything worked into the surface is treating the wrong layer entirely. Submerging the whole piece is the only way to flush it, enzymes deal with the residue, and it comes back with nothing in it to turn again.

Do you collect from Barellan Point, Riverview and the Ipswich side on the same day?

Yes. Barellan Point, Riverview, North Tivoli and Bundamba all fall on the same day's driving, and so does the Ipswich side when there is work waiting. Grouping them is what makes an acreage run practical in the first place. Anything past the first rug on a single visit has $20 off it, which is worth knowing.

Can you get to a house at the end of a long driveway?

Yes, that is the normal arrangement out here. The driver comes to the door rather than expecting the rug at the gate, rolls it there and carries it back. If access is tight or the gate is locked at certain hours, say so when you book and it gets noted against the run so nobody arrives to a closed gate.
