Before it was West Ipswich, this was Little Ipswich, the name the district carried from the 1840s when settlers first built on the town's western side. The name lasted the better part of a century in daily use, and longer still on the infrastructure: a Little Ipswich railway station served the branch line through here from 1882 to 1964. A suburb that was once a town beside the town keeps a certain independence, and this one still does.
Opened as Little Ipswich State School on 1 August 1861.
An institution older than the state understands doing one job through every fashion. Ours is a good deal younger than that school, but the principle matches: one method, done properly.
The school here opened on 1 August 1861 as Little Ipswich State School, in the first years of Queensland itself, and it carries one of the odder arcs in the state's education story. Renamed Ipswich West State School, it was split into separate boys' and girls' schools on 17 September 1883, ran that way for half a century, and was rejoined on 1 January 1934. Through every change it stayed on the same side of town, where it still teaches today.
Boundary changes in 1991 left a small suburb with a long history.
