A rug from a working valley property is rarely damaged. It is loaded. Years of soil have gone down into it and years of heavy air have kept them company, and neither of those is a structural fault. So the first thing we do is establish that distinction by hand, then wet the rug right through, rinse it until the water leaves clear, and dry it in a room where nothing is left to the season.

Here is what does not work: dragging a machine across the top and hoping. Soil in a rug this age is not on the surface any more, it is packed at the base against the knots, and it stays there abrading fibre every time somebody crosses the room. Water reaches it because water follows the same path the soil took. The bath strength is chosen after testing the dyes, never before.

What we will not do is guess. Every mark gets tested against the fibre and the surviving dye before treatment starts, and the treatment stays inside whatever that test allows even when pushing further might look better in the short term. Afterwards there is no soft language about it. You hear which marks released and which ones the rug now owns for good.

Mopping at the time is exactly why it comes back. The liquid that mattered had already passed into the foundation, and everything since has been applied to a surface it is not sitting on. A full bath reaches the depth the urine reached. Enzymes then break apart the compounds responsible for the smell, and controlled drying means it does not reappear the first time the weather turns close.

You cannot air an odour out of wool, and the reason is chemical rather than practical. The compounds are attached to the fibre, so moving air past them accomplishes nothing at all. Washing breaks that attachment and the rinse carries the results away. We never mask anything with fragrance at the end, because that leaves a household with the original problem plus a new one.

Almost every ruined spot was ruined by the response. Firm rubbing lays the wool over and drives dye outward into pile that had nothing wrong with it, and the resulting ring is what people see from the far side of a room. We test what is safe, keep pressure very light, comb the pile back into line, and say when a mark runs deeper.

On the right construction this is fast and effective, and the rug is back down within hours, which suits a house where somebody is always coming in off the block. Applied to hand knotted wool it produces damage on a delay, surfacing years later when nobody connects the two events. The wrong decision here is permanent, which is why it is never made by eye. A swab on the reverse gives an answer within a minute, and it happens on every rug regardless of how sound it looks. When immersion is ruled out we work through the rug in sections with a compound, which takes longer and returns less, and both of those facts are put to you before anything is booked.

Wet wool moves quickly from a cleaning job to a treatment job, and the crossing point is about a week. Smell arrives inside two days and growth follows, so the useful action is a phone call the moment it is found, with an accurate description of the water involved. Clean and contaminated water are handled differently from the first step. Drying comes first, assessment second, and the assessment is free.

Nothing exotic is going on. Organic fibre plus uninterrupted damp equals growth, and a valley that stays heavy for weeks at a time supplies the damp reliably. Treated washing takes out the growth and the residue holding it, the rinse removes both from the fibre, and controlled drying then clears the moisture that started it. Leave the drying to a valley season and the same result arrives again.

Moth damage is a function of stillness, not of numbers, and every house has places that stay still for months. Treated washing takes eggs, larvae and adults in a single pass rather than repeat visits, and the fibre already gone leaves with the rinse water instead of confusing the picture afterwards. What this does is buy a short delay, and a short delay is often the whole game. Liquid that sits on the surface for a minute can be lifted with a cloth. Liquid that has reached the foundation cannot be lifted at all. We describe it in exactly those terms and no stronger. Handle, sheen and colour are untouched, and some rugs get very little from it.
