Three and a half square kilometres above the river
Tivoli covers 3.6 square kilometres on the northern bank of the Bremer River, 4.8 kilometres north-northeast of the Ipswich CBD and about 37 kilometres from Brisbane, in the City of Ipswich. The Warrego Highway crosses its northern edge and Mount Crosby Road runs through the middle, and the rise once mapped as the separate suburb of Tivoli Hill has been part of Tivoli since 1991. Population at the 2021 census was 1,460. What makes this a good suburb for our trade is not size, it is attitude. Households here keep things that still work, and that policy applies to floors as much as anything else. You never see that road. Tivoli sits on the scheduled Ipswich run, collection and return come with the job, and the window is confirmed once the day is set.
A mine that named a district, the coal of 1864, and the school of 1877
A suburb that changed its whole economy and kept its name.
Hooper and Robinson called their coal mine the Tivoli, and the map followed.
A district named for the work done in it suits our trade. The name on our van has meant the same thing for 29 years: rugs washed by hand at Yatala, judged honestly first.
Harry Hooper and his partner John Robinson called their mine, and one of the coal seams on it, the Tivoli, and the locality took its name from the mine. Where the word itself came from is recorded only loosely: it is said to have been connected to the Hooper family, perhaps an old family name. Either way, this is one of the few Queensland suburbs named after a coal seam, and the name has outlived the industry that coined it.
The district's first coal was mined from 1864 at the Davies Mine.
Generations of mining households bought rugs built to last, and their descendants still hold some. We wash them the way they were bought, as things meant to serve.
The first coal in the district was mined from 1864 at the Davies Mine, which eventually became known as the Old Tivoli Mine, financed and developed by John Robinson and Harry Hooper with the coal and coke going to the colony's new railways. The venture passed to the Gullard family in the early 1870s, a branch railway reached the district's mines in 1898, and from 1913 to about 1932 a coal tramway ran from the Tivoli pits to the pumping station at the Mount Crosby weir.

A school near its 150th year runs on upkeep rather than reinvention. Our version of upkeep is a rug bathed properly every couple of years instead of replaced every ten.
Tivoli Provisional School opened on 26 January 1877, recorded as starting with 115 pupils, a remarkable first-day roll that shows how full the mining district already was. It became Tivoli State School on 17 January 1881 and is still teaching on Mount Crosby Road nearly 150 years later, the steady centre of a suburb that has otherwise changed its whole economy around it.

How much does rug cleaning in Tivoli cost?
If the rug has not been seen, no honest figure exists. Once it has, size, fibre and condition settle the number and the number then stays put. If a piece will not repay the work you are told at that point. Collection and return are already part of the Ipswich run.
Our rug is very old. Will washing damage it?
Not when the method matches the rug. Aged pieces are tested for dye movement and checked for foundation strength before anything is decided, and where water is not safe the rug is cleaned with low moisture compounds instead. The fibre, the construction and the condition all get read on the bench, and you get a plain assessment of what a wash will and will not achieve before any money changes hands. Sometimes the answer is that a rug is worth considerably more care than expected.
The dog urinated on our wool rug. Can the smell be fully removed?
Yes, if the treatment reaches the foundation, and that is the whole issue. Urine goes through the pile and stays at the backing. If the rug is bathed, that layer flushes out. If enzymes follow, the source is broken down. And if the drying is completed, river damp has nothing to work on.
