A shift worker's unit, a share house behind the highway, a long-held family home off Ferry Road. What they share is a pile carrying salt off the Broadwater and grit off the street, both sitting under the surface where a vacuum has no purchase. That history is why the assessment matters more here than any price list. We identify the fibre, check how the dyes behave and look hard at the foundation, because a rug moved six times has usually been rolled badly at least once along the way. The bath follows from that. What we will not do is wash a piece we have already told you is finished.

The order of work does not change. What the substance is, then whether the dye holds under it, then the treatment itself. Skip either of the first two and an ordinary mark becomes a bleached patch, which is the single most common piece of damage we get asked to repair. You are told which marks are leaving and which have become part of the rug.

The honest position is that most of it is recoverable and some staining is not. Urine sinks past the pile and settles in the foundation, well out of reach of anything applied on top, which is why a supermarket product buys a fortnight. Immersion takes it out of the rug, enzymes finish the residue, and the piece dries out completely.

That produces a smell nobody in the flat notices and every visitor does. It is not the room, it is the pile, and no amount of open windows in a high-rise canyon will shift it. Washing takes the source away, the rinse removes what is left of it, and a machine dry finishes the job the building was never going to finish. Nothing scented goes on afterwards.

It comes down to fibre and time. A fresh mark on wool usually lifts. An old one on viscose usually does not, and pushing at it only crushes the pile into a patch that catches the light from across the room. We test first, work gently, and reset the area afterwards. Where it needs the full bath to have any chance, we say so on the spot.

A stable synthetic construction takes heat and pressure without harm, and a fast turnaround suits a household that needs its floor back. Hand knotted wool and silk take neither, and there is no repairing the result afterwards. We identify the construction, name the process and explain the reason. Nobody gets sold the slower option because it sounds more thorough on an invoice.

Those are the pieces where water may not be an option at all. A damp swab on a hidden corner tells us whether the dye moves and whether the foundation has gone brittle, and either answer sends the rug to low moisture compound cleaning instead. It reaches less than a bath does. It also cannot take colour out of a rug that has held it for a century.

The clock starts at the incident, not at the phone call, and that gap usually decides the outcome. Wet wool loses strength and sours fast in this humidity. Ring, say what the water actually was, and let the rug be stabilised and dried before anything else is contemplated. Whether it is worth restoring gets answered before a figure is put on the job.

The cause is a cool slab, a shut-up flat and a rug nobody has lifted. Growth begins on the floor side and is well established by the time anything appears on the face. An antimicrobial bath removes the growth and the soil feeding it, the rinse clears the remainder, and a complete dry takes away the condition itself. Weakened foundations get reported rather than glossed over.

Rolled and forgotten is the perfect arrangement for them: wool, darkness and no traffic at all. By the time the rug comes out for the next place, the larvae have finished with it. A treated bath ends every stage at once and washes the casings and dust out with the soil, after which the loss can finally be measured properly.

It buys time between a spill and a stain rather than repelling anything, and that is exactly how it should be described.
