A name about birds, older than everything built on it
Sippy Downs takes its name from an Aboriginal word, dhippi or jippi, a general term for winged creatures understood to mean a place of birds. That name is decades older than the suburb wearing it. The land was first taken up as a perpetual lease in 1938 and worked as cane farming for most of the century that followed, with the last farm here closing only in 2003. So underneath a suburb everybody associates with a university campus there is a name from before any of it and a working farming history running almost up to the present. The locality covers 14.5 square kilometres 5.4 kilometres south of Buderim, with Buderim, Mountain Creek, Tanawha and Palmview as its main neighbours and a border touch toward Warana and Meridan Plains on the coastal side.
Everybody sees the campus. Under it is cane ground that was still being farmed in 2003. We look at rugs the same way, which is that the interesting part is always underneath.
The campus came first and the suburb grew around it
The University of the Sunshine Coast opened here on 26 February 1996 with 542 students, on a 100 hectare former cane-land site rezoned in 1993. Planning started in 1994, works commenced on 4 September that year, and the campus opened barely two years later as the first entirely new Australian university site since 1971, master planned as Australia's first university town on the UK model. It gained full university status in 1999. The suburb effectively assembled itself around the campus rather than the other way round. What that produces for us is an unusually wide mix on one collection morning: student and staff rentals close to the university, established family homes further out, and Chancellor State College and Siena Catholic College drawing families of their own. Population reached 11,544 at the 2021 census, up from 10,298, at 796 people per square kilometre.
Plateau cloud, new estate ground, and what settles into a base
Sitting on the southern edge of the Buderim plateau, Sippy Downs catches the cloud and rainfall the plateau collects more broadly, which means more overcast days and slower drying than the coastal strip a few kilometres away.
