A minister's farm in the 1870s gave the suburb its Cheshire name.
A suburb named off a farm gate suits a business that still works with its hands. Every rug collected here is read honestly and washed by hand at the Yatala wash floor.
The Williams family were the district's first settlers in 1868 and cotton was growing here by 1870. In the 1870s the Reverend J. McLaren named his farm Runcorn, reportedly after Runcorn in Cheshire, England, and the name spread from his gate to the whole district. By 1886 the area had its own industry, when Messrs Main, Clazy and Smith started the Runcorn Bone Mill. Farms became estates from the 1960s and the growth has barely paused since.
Opened as a provisional school in 1901, made a state school in 1909.

Runcorn's school opened on 8 July 1901 as Runcorn Provisional School, the modest classification Queensland gave small country schools, and was upgraded to Runcorn State School on 1 January 1909 as the farming district grew. The later boom added Runcorn Heights State School on 28 January 1975 and Runcorn State High School on 28 January 1986, but the 1901 school remains the district's original.
Queensland State Archives has held the public record here since 1993.

The Queensland State Archives building opened in Runcorn in 1993, with a second building added in 2008, and it holds the state's permanent public record: convict-era registers, court documents, maps and files reaching back to the beginning of Queensland.
