A careful figure for MacGregor's best pieces
A hand knotted rug deserves a considered number rather than a guess over the phone. It is inspected, the figure is set, and after that the figure does not change.

Rug washing MacGregor's fine rugs have been waiting for
The best rug population on the southside
MacGregor is compact, only 2.7 square kilometres roughly 13 kilometres out from town to the south, with 5,980 residents at the 2021 census, and yet it holds a concentration of genuinely fine rugs that few Brisbane suburbs come close to. Imported Chinese silk, hand knotted wool, viscose pieces chosen for a formal room and quietly worried about ever since. Mandarin was recorded at the census as the most common language here after English, and the households we visit tend to be multi-generational, which means rugs bought once and kept across decades and sometimes across two addresses. That kind of ownership deserves a cleaner who thinks the same way, and washing by hand is the only method that honours it.
A rug bought to outlive the furniture should never be handed to a machine.
Brick homes, rebuilt around good floors
The housing here started as solid 1970s brick on generous blocks, and a great many of those houses have since been rebuilt or extended into large modern family homes with tiled living areas running through them. Hard floors change everything about how a rug lives. The rug becomes the only soft surface in the room, so it takes all the traffic, all the dropped food and all the dust that walks in from a hot inland street. Even the finest piece slowly collects a film of grit that flattens its colour years before anybody would think of it as dirty, and most of what leaves a MacGregor rug on our floor was completely invisible on the day of the booking. The owners are not careless. The change is simply too gradual to notice while you are living on top of it.
Inland heat, then the storms
This plateau sits well past the reach of any bay breeze, so summer parks itself overhead and stays. Then the storm cells come through from the inland side across the back half of the year, and the swing from hard dry heat to sudden humidity is exactly what fine fibres like least. Moisture dulls the sheen on silk and viscose, and it fixes dust that was previously loose down into the pile where suction can no longer reach it. A careful hand wash at the pH those fibres require is the only safe reset available. The motorway makes the rest simple, and the piece arrives home dry right through to the knot. Owners of fine rugs are usually the ones who ask most about that drying stage, and rightly so. Silk left with moisture in it will mark, and viscose left with moisture in it will do worse, so nothing leaves our building until it is genuinely finished.

The road a MacGregor rug takes
MacGregor sits mid-route on our Sunnybank corridor mornings. That makes both legs of the journey free for you, and your collection window follows once the morning's order is worked out.
A governor, a tornado and a farmer's paddock
A suburb that has rebuilt itself house by house since 1967.
The suburb carries the name of Sir William MacGregor.
A place that rebuilds one house at a time understands doing a job properly rather than quickly. That is the same trade philosophy we work to: hand washing, honest assessment, and 29 years of both.
This corner of the Sunnybank district was declared a suburb of its own on 1 August 1967, taking the name of Sir William MacGregor, the Scottish-born doctor's son who served as Governor of Queensland from 1909 until 1914. The paddocks carrying his name filled with brick family homes across the 1970s, and the suburb has been quietly rebuilding itself one house at a time ever since.
Opened in 1969, then rebuilt after a tornado struck in 1973.
Brisbane weather can turn violent with almost no warning, and rugs pay for it when water gets inside. A rug that has taken storm moisture needs full immersion and complete controlled drying, which is precisely what our Yatala facility is set up to do.
MacGregor State High School opened on 28 January 1969 with nine teachers and 203 students, and it had barely settled in when a tornado struck on 4 November 1973 and caused extensive damage to the buildings. It was repaired and kept growing. Together with MacGregor State School, which opened on 24 January 1972, it anchors a school precinct that drives a great deal of local house hunting.
The suburb's main park remembers the farmer who worked this land.
From farm paddock to netball courts inside a single lifetime. The homes on that ground now hold rugs from all over the world, and every one of them is washed by hand the way its maker intended.
D. M. Henderson Park is named after Daniel Murray Henderson, a local farmer born around 1871 who worked this district until his death in 1954, barely a decade before the suburb was declared. The park now holds the courts of the MacGregor Netball Association and the weekend sport of a suburb that grew directly out of his paddocks.

MacGregor questions about fine rugs
Can a hand knotted silk rug be washed without damaging it?
Yes, as long as it is done slowly and entirely by hand. Dyes are tested before anything begins, the bath runs at whatever pH the fibre needs, and a person rather than a machine does every part of it. It is machinery that puts silk at risk rather than water, and none of ours ever meets a fine rug.
What about viscose? I have been told it cannot be cleaned.
It can, but it is the least forgiving fibre in most homes, and it deserves that reputation. Viscose watermarks easily and its pile crushes under pressure, so it needs correct moisture control and a very light hand rather than force. We assess it carefully and we will tell you honestly if a particular piece carries real risk.
What does washing a fine MacGregor rug come to?
Size, fibre and condition decide it, and hand knotted work takes longer than machine made work, which the figure reflects. Inspection produces one price that then stays put, both trips ride on the corridor schedule, and a rug that cannot earn back what it costs is flagged there.
The puppy urinated on our good wool rug. Is it recoverable?
Almost always. What makes urine stubborn is depth. It does not stop at the pile, it carries on down to the base of the rug, and a spray applied on top can only ever hold it quiet between humid spells. A full bath reverses that, enzymes neutralise the source, and drying the rug right through removes what would otherwise reactivate. Any dye movement is reported at the assessment.
Do you also collect from Sunnybank, Robertson and Eight Mile Plains?
Yes. One scheduled corridor morning covers MacGregor and its neighbours, so relatives a few streets away can send rugs on the same date. $20 comes off each extra piece collected on the same day.
My rug looks dull rather than dirty. Is washing worth the money?
In the great majority of cases yes, and where it is not, that is said. Dullness on a fine rug is usually fine dust worked through the pile rather than any loss of fibre, and the colour beneath is exactly as it always was. A full soak clears the grit out and the depth returns with it.
