Wilsonton was officially named in 1981, and the name is believed to honour James T. Wilson, a Toowoomba businessman active through the 1870s. Twenty five years later the map changed again, when the 2006 boundary adjustment separated Wilsonton Heights out as a locality of its own and left Wilsonton as the larger and longer established of the pair. That is a genuinely different piece of civic history from a rename. One suburb was divided, deliberately, because the population had reached the point where two made more sense than one. Three schools: Wilsonton State School since 1894, Sacred Heart Primary since 1968, Fairview Heights State School since 1995, with well over 1,300 children enrolled between them.
