Lake Manchester is bush and catchment country 43.8 kilometres west of the Brisbane centre, split between the City of Brisbane and the Somerset Region, and we will state its size plainly rather than dress it up: 17 people lived here at the 2021 census. The north of the locality sits inside D'Aguilar National Park, most of the south is state forest, and the western Somerset section is grazing land under native vegetation. What that leaves is a handful of rural properties and farmhouses around the catchment edges, homes that live with dust, dogs, horses and a wood fire through winter. The rugs in them are big, practical and long held, and they take more punishment in a year than a suburban rug sees in several. The people who built that wall understood that water does its best work when it is controlled. So do we: full immersion, then controlled drying, so every rug leaves Yatala completely dry.
After the drought of 1902 raised hard questions about how much water the city could store, the dam on Cabbage Tree Creek was built between 1912 and 1916, a mass concrete wall 220 metres long and 35 metres high, recorded as the largest dam in Queensland at the time it was finished. In 1916 the new lake was named for E. J. T. Manchester, president of the water board from 1909 to 1928, and the dam has held its place in the supply system ever since.
A school served this district from 1900 to about 1919.
A district straightforward enough to close its school when the work moved on suits our way of dealing. We tell you what a rug needs, and just as readily when it needs nothing.
Noogoora Provisional School opened in 1900 for the scattered families of this district, became a state school on 1 December 1914, and was renamed Cabbage Tree State School around 1916, in the years the workforce here was at its largest. It closed again around 1919 once the work wound down, and the district went back to the quiet it has kept ever since. Children from the properties out here now travel toward Mount Crosby for school.

Our rug smells of wood smoke. Does that actually come out?
It does, because smoke residue is a substance sitting inside the fibre rather than a smell hanging in the room, and substances can be dissolved and rinsed away. Airing the house will not shift it and nor will a surface clean. A full immersion wash reaches the base of the pile where most of a winter's worth has settled, and nothing scented goes on afterwards to cover what is left.
What does a rug wash cost out here?
The same way it is worked out anywhere else, and the distance does not enter into it on the scheduled day. Dimensions, fibre, construction and the load the rug is holding set the figure between them. The dog urinated on the rug by the fire. Can it be saved?
Almost always. Urine goes through the pile and dries into the foundation, so anything you apply on top is working two layers above the problem. It has to be flushed, which means the whole rug under water rather than a patch treatment, then an enzyme stage, then drying that takes the moisture out entirely. After that the room stays clear.
