Two different soils arrive on a rug here. There is silt off the river side of the locality, which is fine and pale, and there is road grit from the industrial estate and the highway, which is coarse and dark. They behave differently in a pile and they come out differently in a bath. Working out which one a rug is carrying is part of the inspection, not guesswork done later at the sink.

Retirement-age households own the oldest rugs we handle, and old rugs reward washing more than new ones do. Decades of light, steady use lay down an even film across the whole pile rather than three hard tracks. That film flattens colour without wearing the wool out, which is why the difference between a Chinderah rug before and after a bath is often startling to the person who owned it.

An undated mark is the interesting case. Without knowing the cause we work from what the fibre says: how the edge behaves, whether colour sits above or below the surface, whether it moves under a test. That reading sets what is safe to attempt. What we will not do is escalate because a gentle first attempt did nothing, since that is how a mark becomes a bald patch.

Long-lived pets in settled houses produce a particular problem: not one accident but slow accumulation into one part of the foundation over years. By the time the smell is noticeable the deposit sits well below the pile. Bathing the rug whole is the only thing that reaches it, enzymes then break down what generates the odour, and drying decides whether it stays gone.

Smell in wool is a chemical attachment, not a coating, which is the reason opening the doors on a bright day changes nothing. The bath breaks the attachment and the rinse takes away what is released. Nothing perfumed goes near the rug at any point, because a fragrance sitting over a smell is two smells, and the second one wears off first.

The damage done at home is nearly always done with good intentions and a stiff brush. Wool pressed flat does not spring back, and colour pushed outward stays there, so a small dark spot becomes a large pale one. On site we work within what the pile tolerates, groom the surface back down, and say straight out when a bath is the honest answer.

These rugs are engineered for the process and they dry fast, which matters in a house where nobody wants a room closed off. The same process on hand-knotted wool causes damage that surfaces years later, when nobody remembers what was done. Since plenty of homes here own one of each, we identify both before either goes anywhere, and we say which is which out loud.

Perhaps one rug in ten out of an older household cannot be immersed, and finding that one is the entire reason we look at the reverse before anything else. Compound work is the alternative. It lifts surface soil, leaves the base of the pile largely untouched, and returns a rug that looks better without being genuinely clean. That is a real limitation and it gets explained rather than glossed over.

Appliances in long-occupied houses fail on their own schedule, and the rug in the next room usually finds out first. Two things decide the job: what the water was, and how long it sat. Tell us both when you ring. Stabilising and drying happen before any judgement, since a saturated rug will not show you its own condition, and the judgement itself carries no fee.

Air on the lower Tweed carries moisture that settles indoors and stays, and river-side rooms get the most of it. That is all growth needs. Treatment in the bath ends the colony, the rinse removes the residue it fed on, and a controlled dry pulls out the water that started it. Return the rug wet and the sequence repeats.

A house that has been arranged the same way for twenty years is close to ideal for moths, since the one thing they need is wool nobody disturbs. A treated bath ends eggs, larvae and adults together, which surface sprays never do. Once the chewed fibre has gone out with the rinse, the real extent of the loss becomes visible, and until then any estimate is a guess.

It slows a spill down. That is the claim and there is no larger one behind it. Liquid stays up in the pile longer instead of running to the base, which usually gives somebody time to get to it. Nothing about the way the rug feels, reflects light or holds colour is altered, and it does not change how often the rug needs washing.
