Rug washing Bilinga, on the narrow strip
Two and a half square kilometres, most of it not houses
Bilinga covers 2.6 square kilometres, 2.8 kilometres west-northwest of Coolangatta and 24.6 kilometres south-southeast of Surfers Paradise, bounded by Boyd Street to the northwest, the Coral Sea to the east and the New South Wales border to the west. Gold Coast Airport takes up the majority of that area. The Gold Coast Desalination Plant occupies the northwest corner and Southern Cross University's Gold Coast campus holds the southern portion, so what is left for houses is a narrow strip between the runway and the beach. The 2021 census counted 1,883 people here. It is a small suburb and there is no point pretending otherwise, but the exposure along that strip is as heavy as anywhere on the coast, and the rugs inside it show it.
Sand does not stay on top of a rug. It works down to the base and cuts the fibre from underneath, and only water gets it out.
What is left over, and what lives in it
The housing here is what the bigger tourist strips have mostly lost: low-rise timber beach cottages and older brick units, close enough to hear the surf on one side and the airport on the other. Sunscreen is the one that surprises people, because the oils bind into the fibre instead of resting on it and they resist a general cleaner completely. Mould Rug Cleaning

A name from bats, a runway across a border, a club built after a drowning
Three things that shaped a suburb of two and a half square kilometres.
Bilinga takes its name from Bilinba, an Aboriginal word for bats, adopted in 1918 as the place name for Crown land north of Coolangatta.
A name that arrived before the streets did is a small reminder that this stretch of coast grew slowly and deliberately rather than overnight, which is the same unhurried standard we bring to a proper rug wash.
The word Bilinga derives from Bilinba, meaning bats, and it was formally adopted in 1918 as the place name for a stretch of Crown land immediately north of Coolangatta. The name predates most of the suburb's actual development: five land portions had only been advertised for agricultural selection a decade earlier, in 1908, and it was another year after the naming, in 1919, before a rail siding near the Gold Coast Highway and George Street gave the area its first real reason to grow, helped along by Percy Hanzel's general store beside the siding.
Gold Coast Airport occupies the majority of Bilinga's land and its runway continues across the New South Wales border.

How is the price worked out?

The rug looks fine but feels gritty underfoot. What is that?
Sand that has worked below the pile surface, which is the most common finding on this strip. It cannot be vacuumed out because it is not sitting on top, and it cuts the fibre a little more every time someone crosses the room. Immersion floats it clear of the foundation, which is the only place it can actually be removed from.
There is dog urine in the rug by the back door. Can that be dealt with?
Usually yes. Urine goes past the pile within seconds and settles in the foundation, so anything applied on top is working at the wrong depth. The bath clears the foundation and an enzyme stage removes what actually creates the smell. Where the dye has already been altered, that is described before any work is agreed.
Do you also collect from Coolangatta, Kirra and Tugun?
