Rug washing Wilston keeps for the long haul
Blue-chip boards, blue-chip rugs
Wilston is among the addresses the inner north holds onto most tightly: 1.4 square kilometres of ridge streets, 4,110 residents at the 2021 census, and block after block of ornate timber homes from the 1900s through the 1930s, most of them restored with real care. Inside, the floors are polished hoop pine under VJ walls, and the rugs are chosen to live on them: Persian and Turkish pieces bought deliberately, quality wool protecting original boards, and inherited rugs that arrived with the family furniture. Owners here tend to know exactly what their pieces are worth, which suits us, because our first step is an honest assessment that tells you the same thing. Then the rug travels to Yatala for the kind of wash that respects what it is. All of this sits barely five kilometres north of the CBD, and the rugs inside these houses are bought with the same long view as the houses themselves.
An heirloom rug does not need much. It needs the right thing, done at the right time, by hands that know it.
The house that named the suburb
The name on the street signs traces to Wilston House, built around 1876 by William Wilson, who had settled the district in 1868 and named his home for his birthplace at Derrykeeghan near Enniskillen in Ireland. When John Stevenson took the estate in 1884 and cut it into streets, the house's name went with the land, and the suburb has carried one Irish family's memory ever since. That sense of continuity still defines the place, from the village strip on Kedron Brook Road that runs on morning coffee and evening tables, to the Gorillas of the Wilston Grange Football Club, formed in 1945 and still drawing their name and support from these streets. A suburb this good at keeping things tends to keep its rugs too, and we have washed some of them for decades.
The season a Queenslander stores underfoot
Ridge homes catch the breeze, but a raised Queenslander also breathes, and in storm season what it breathes is damp. Humid air moves up through the floorboards, wool pile takes it in, and the day's dust binds with the moisture at the base of the rug where no vacuum reaches. By autumn the result is familiar: pile that sits flat, colour a shade duller than memory, and a faint mustiness in the front room with no visible cause. None of it is wear. Complete immersion at our Yatala facility draws the stored season back out of the wool, and the controlled drying stage matters twice as much here, because a rug returned to old boards must be dry at its core, not merely dry to the touch.

Three ways to know Wilston
Small suburb, long memory, all of it within a short walk.
The shopping strip on Kedron Brook Road that gives the suburb its centre.
A suburb that walks to its village appreciates a service that comes to the door. Send the form and the driver takes care of the rest when the weekly run comes past.
Wilston Village is the compact run of cafes, restaurants and local shops along Kedron Brook Road, and it behaves exactly as a village centre should: coffee carries the mornings, restaurant tables carry the evenings, and most of the trade walks in from the surrounding streets. Few inner-north suburbs this small keep a working retail heart of their own, which goes a long way toward explaining why Wilston holds its value so stubbornly.
Wilston House, built around 1876, gave an Irish farm's name to the whole suburb.
Half the rugs we collect here carry family history the same way, so they get the treatment history deserves: assessed honestly, washed by hand, returned dry.
William Wilson settled this district in 1868 and around 1876 built Wilston House, named for his birthplace at Derrykeeghan Mills near Enniskillen in County Fermanagh. When John Stevenson acquired the estate in 1884 and subdivided it, the house's name travelled with the land onto the suburb that grew across it. Today's street signs carry, at their root, one family's memory of a farm on the other side of the world.
The Gorillas, formed in 1945, at Hickey Park in Stafford since 1964.
Eighty years of turning up is a local standard we recognise. Our own count sits at 29 years of rug washing, and the inner-north run still calls here weekly.
The club began in 1945 as the Wilston Football Club, took its double-barrelled name in 1947, and entered Brisbane's top competition in 1950, adding premierships in 1955, 1969 and 1972. Home games have run at Hickey Park in Stafford since 1964, when VFL great Ron Barassi was guest of honour at the oval's opening, but the name and much of the Saturday support still come from these streets.

Wilston rug questions, answered properly
What decides the price of a Wilston rug clean?
By the rug, at inspection: size, fibre, construction and condition all weigh in, and once the figure is given it is honoured. Collection and delivery are included on the inner-north run. Where a piece is not worth the wash, you hear that first.
The cat urinated on our Persian. Is it ruined?
Very rarely. Urine sinks past the pile and settles in the backing, which is why nothing applied to the surface resolves it. Immersion empties that layer, an enzyme treatment cancels the residue in place, and full drying removes the damp that would otherwise revive it. Dyes are tested first so any genuine risk is named before work starts.
Will a wet-washed rug be safe on our restored floorboards?
Yes, because it does not come home wet. Controlled drying at Yatala carries every rug through to its core before delivery, so nothing damp ever sits against your hoop pine. It is a discipline we treat as part of the wash, not an optional extra.
Do Grange and Windsor share Wilston's collection day?
They do. The inner-north morning threads Wilston with Grange, Windsor, Newmarket and the nearby streets, so families and neighbours often book together. Any rug joining another on the same booking comes in $20 off.
The rug was our grandmother's. How do you treat inherited pieces?
With an honest read before anything else. Age is usually no barrier, and older wool often washes beautifully, but dry rot, brittle foundations or earlier repairs get named at assessment so the decision stays informed and stays yours. Then the wash itself is gentle, by hand, at the correct pH.
We host a lot. How quickly can a rug come back?
The standard door-to-door service runs about 7 days. When a dinner or a family occasion is bearing down, the 48-hour express covers the gap, charged as an extra, and the rug still returns fully dry rather than rushed out damp.
