A small suburb with a genuine gradient
Riverhills covers 2.3 square kilometres 19.5 kilometres southwest of the Brisbane CBD, at the river end of the Centenary corridor. The Brisbane River draws the western boundary along the Pullen Reach and Wolston Creek marks the southern line. The ground is properly hilly, climbing from below 10 metres near the water to over 40 metres in the back streets, and the 2021 census counted 4,121 people living on it. The suburb filled through the 1970s and 80s with brick and tile family homes on sloping blocks, the first of them around the Bogong Street shops. Second and third families are moving through now and renovating as they go, so the rugs are a mix: the original good wool kept through the work, big family synthetics in the living rooms, and runners doing the stairs.

Why the narrow pieces wear out first
Build houses on a slope and the floor plans change shape. You get split levels, internal stairs, landings and long central halls, because that is how you fit a family onto ground that will not sit flat. The consequence for rugs is arithmetic. Everybody in the house crosses the landing and walks the hall, several times a day, every day, and they do it along a strip about a metre wide. A living room rug might see four crossings an hour at the busiest and a good deal of it is never stood on at all, because furniture occupies most of the area. A runner has no furniture on it, no unused margin and no rest. Every step lands in the same line. That is why runners flatten, dull and fray years ahead of the pieces they were bought to match, and why owners so often conclude the runner was poor quality when in fact it has simply done ten times the work. It also changes how the job is handled here. A long narrow rug is harder to wash properly than a big square one, because the length has to be supported evenly the whole way through the bath. Let a wet four metre runner take its own weight and it stretches, and a stretched runner will never lie flat on a hall floor again. Ours go under supported end to end, get worked along their length rather than across it, and come back the size they left.

Damp comes up off the reach on the western side while hot corridor air arrives from the east, so summer loads these closed brick homes with humidity that settles into rug pile, and the dry months bake dust in on top of it. Our wash floor sits about 42 kilometres away and normally 35 to 40 minutes: up onto the Centenary, down as far as the Logan, then east and off at Computer Road. The residue has gone down through the pile and fixed itself to the underside, and on a narrow piece it is usually concentrated in one stretch rather than spread about. The name was proposed by the housing developer in 1972 and made official by the Queensland Place Names Board on 8 January 1973, and it is simple truth in two words. The river runs the suburb's whole western edge and the streets genuinely climb, from below 10 metres at the bank to more than 40 metres up the back. Plenty of estate names promise scenery they cannot deliver. This one only reported what a surveyor could already see.

Newcomb Park sits on the suburb's riverbank with a boat launching area, and it works for a living. The pile has been compressed in one line thousands of times more often than anything in the lounge. Washing lifts most of that back, and we will say honestly how much.
How many days is it away, and is there a quicker route?
Around seven days between the two visits. Where a date is genuinely locked in, ask about the 48-hour express turnaround, charged above an ordinary job and quoted that way beforehand. Either route ends with the piece dry through the foundation, which on a long runner matters more than most people realise.
The dog has urinated on the landing runner repeatedly. Is that recoverable?
Usually. On a narrow piece the deposit is normally concentrated in one stretch, which means a small area holding a heavy load, and nothing applied on top will reach it because it settled against the underside long ago. Immersion carries the deposit outward from underneath and an enzyme stage handles what is left. Any dye damage is named at the assessment.
