A town of 3,589 that has kept everything
Mullumbimby sits at the foot of Mount Chincogan in the Brunswick Valley, about nine kilometres by road from the coast, fifteen kilometres northwest of Byron Bay and a short run west of Brunswick Heads. The 2021 census recorded 3,589 people. It ran as its own municipality from 1908 until 1980, when it merged into Byron Shire, and it still carries its own motto, The Biggest Little Town in Australia. A town that small with that much of its own history intact is a place where people notice who turns up at the door, which is a good enough reason on its own to send the same driver and the same team every time.

A pocket that holds moisture
Being inland from the beach sounds like an advantage for a rug and it is not. Mullumbimby sits in a valley pocket under the mountain, so there is less salt than at Brunswick Heads or Byron Bay and considerably more standing damp. That shows up in three familiar ways: mould behind furniture, a mildew note that arrives after a wet fortnight and stays, and a rug that never fully dries out again after somebody airs it on a verandah.

Pet Stain and Odour
Dogs come back off the valley roads wet and muddy, and an indoor cat with one favourite corner will keep returning to exactly that corner.
The problem is never on top. Urine settles into the backing and produces odour from there indefinitely, which is why the smell reappears every time this valley turns humid, which is often. Handmade and imported rugs occasionally carry dyes that were fixed by eye rather than to a standard, and a bath will find that out the expensive way if nobody tests first. A town of 3,589 people that has held on to its own name, its own motto and its own main street for well over a century is exactly the sort of place worth knowing something about before collecting a rug from it.
The name comes from the Bandjalung-Yugambeh word mulubinba, meaning small round hill, which is Mount Chincogan standing over the town. Henry John Rous was the first European to explore the district in 1828. Timber came first, especially red cedar, then dairying, then fruit, bananas and sugar cane. Mullumbimby ran as its own municipality from 1908 until 1980, when it merged into Byron Shire.

Mount Chincogan is a minor lava plug of the extinct Tweed shield volcano, the same volcanic system that shaped the whole caldera behind this coast. The town sits at its foot, about nine kilometres by road from the sea, which is why Mullumbimby reads as a valley town rather than a beach one despite being so close to the water.
A hydro-electric station completed in 1926 supplied power well beyond Mullumbimby itself.

The Mullumbimby Hydro-electric Power Station Complex was designed by William Corin and built between 1924 and 1926. The station it produced supplied electricity a long way past the town, reaching Bangalow and Byron Bay as well. It ran until it was decommissioned in 1990 and is recognised today for its state heritage significance.
