A surf village that grew up without changing
Lennox Head sits on the headland between Ballina and Byron Bay, eleven kilometres north of one and twenty kilometres south of the other. Seven Mile Beach runs north from the point and Lake Ainsworth sits immediately behind the dunes. The 2021 census recorded 7,483 people across the Lennox Head and Skennars Head area, slightly down from 7,741 in 2016. It grew into a proper coastal town without ever becoming Byron Bay, which is a fair description of the housing too: older beach houses and fibro cottages on the streets behind the point, newer family homes spreading back toward the highway, and a solid layer of holiday rental along the beachfront.

An exposed headland, and no buffer at all
There is nothing between the beach and the streets here, which makes the sand load worse than anywhere else on this run and the salt load constant. Salt is the quieter of the two. It dissolves, it travels through the fibre and it comes out in the rinse water or it stays put. Sand is the one that does actual harm. Individual grains are angular under magnification, they migrate downward until they reach the backing, and every footstep after that grinds them against the fibre from below.
That is why a rug in this town can look reasonable and still be losing pile. Flushing the weave with the rug fully immersed is the only process that gets the grains back out rather than pushing them further in. After that the drying is finished in a controlled room, because a coastal house does not give a heavy rug the conditions it needs to dry through on its own.

Pet Stain and Odour

A village that settled on a name and kept it.
Captain Henry John Rous named Lennox Head in 1828 after his friend Charles Gordon-Lennox, 5th Duke of Richmond.
A headland named in 1828 and never renamed is a rare thing on this coast, where half the towns have changed names at least once. We like a place that settled on something and stuck with it.
Rous charted this stretch of coast in 1828, the same voyage on which he named the Richmond River, and the headland took the name of the same family. From 1842, freed convicts working as loggers formed small colonies in the area, and those camps grew into the town. The name has never changed since.
A freshwater lake behind the dunes, stained the colour of tea by the tea trees around it.
Tannin is a dye, and a naturally coloured rug behaves the same way: colour that moves if it meets the wrong water or the wrong chemistry. Testing for dye bleed before anything gets wet is a standard part of our assessment.
Lake Ainsworth is a freshwater lake with distinctive tannin-stained water, coloured by the tea trees growing along its edges. It sits immediately behind the beach, so the town has open surf on one side of a strip of dune and still fresh water on the other, which is unusual on this coast and the reason the lake has been a swimming and paddling spot for generations.
The right-hand point break at Lennox was declared a National Surfing Reserve in 2007, the third in Australia.

The point has been described as the finest right-hand break in the country, a long, powerful wave that is genuinely only for experienced surfers because of the size it can reach and the currents that run with it.
