On an older rug the risk is rarely the spill itself. It is what gets rubbed into it in the first ten minutes with a cloth and whatever is under the sink, which can set the mark and take a patch of colour with it. Blot, leave it, and let us test first. Where a stain will only lighten rather than disappear you are told that up front.

Submersion rinses the residue out of the foundation, an enzyme stage neutralises what remains, and the drying is taken all the way through so damp weeks cannot restart it. Odour is a material problem, so it is solved by removing material. A bath breaks it down, the rinse carries it away and the drying room removes the moisture that gave it somewhere to live. Older rugs sometimes carry dyes that were never intended to be washed, and some newer constructions are glued rather than woven through. Both are picked up in testing rather than found the hard way. Those rugs are worked in sections with compound, kept supported throughout, and given the time the method actually needs instead of the time a schedule would prefer.
