Being a border place means a rug here gets both climates. Salt-free coastal humidity from the east and colder, wetter hinterland air off the range, often in the same week. The two do different things to wool and they need telling apart. We work out which load is dominant before choosing anything, because the wrong assumption produces a clean rug that smells again by the month's end.

Two separate things happen when a rug is immersed and people tend to merge them. The bath loosens and suspends what has bedded down at the knots. The rinse is what actually removes it from the piece. Skip or shorten either and you get a rug that looks better and behaves the same. We do both properly, at the strength the dyes and foundation permit.

Half the work is separating one mark from another. A patch that looks like a single stain is often two events overlaid, sometimes years apart, and treating it as one thing gets you a partial result. We look at each layer, test what the fibre and dye will take, treat accordingly, and describe the outcome in plain terms, permanent marks named as permanent.

There are two problems here and they get confused constantly. One is the visible mark on the surface, which is generally the easy half. The other is urine that has gone into the foundation and stays there releasing odour, which nothing applied on top will ever reach. Immersion handles the second, enzymes break down the compounds behind it, and controlled drying keeps it from returning.

Odour and dirt are separate problems that generally travel together, so a rug can smell strongly and look acceptable, or the reverse. Smell is chemically joined to the fibre and will not air out of it here. The wash breaks that join and the rinse takes away what it frees. We never add fragrance, because two smells in a room is not an improvement on one.

It helps to separate what a spot treatment can do from what it cannot. It can lift a fresh mark that has not reached the foundation. It cannot deal with anything below that, and pushing harder to try only crushes the pile and widens the visible area. We test, apply the least that works, comb the lay straight, and say clearly when the honest answer is a bath.

Keeping synthetics and hand knotted wool apart is the whole discipline here. Synthetics are built for extraction and return to the floor within hours. Wool treated the same way suffers damage that will not show for years and cannot be repaired when it does. Construction settles which of the two we are looking at, and you are told the answer before anything begins.

Older timber homes in this town frequently hold a rug that came from somewhere else entirely and has never been tested. The check on the reverse separates the pieces that can be wetted from the ones that cannot, and it takes about a minute. Where water is out, compound work in sections is the alternative, and a dye that has run is not recoverable afterwards.

Clean water and contaminated water are two different jobs and the difference decides everything that follows, so tell us which it was when you ring. Time counts too, because the foundation begins breaking down while the rug stays wet. We collect, dry and stabilise the piece before anybody forms a view, and that view comes to you without a charge.

Two conditions have to be present for growth: moisture that does not clear, and something covering the floor so it cannot. On this valley floor the first is a given for weeks at a time. Treating the bath deals with the colony and the deposit it has bedded into. Rinsing removes them. The drying room then takes away the moisture, which is the part that decides whether it comes back.

It is worth separating the two kinds of damage. There is the cosmetic thinning people notice, and there is the structural loss underneath it that they do not, and the second is usually further along. A single treated wash ends eggs, larvae and adults together, the chewed fibre goes out with the rinse, and only then can both kinds be measured properly.

Separate the promise from the reality and it becomes a sensible product. The reality is a short delay before a liquid moves down into the pile. The promise some people hear is a barrier, and there is no barrier involved. Used with the right expectation it earns its place in a busy house. It leaves the handle, the sheen and the colour exactly as they were.
