An honest quote for range-top farms and acreage blocks
A rug carrying a winter of ash still gets read properly before any number is mentioned. One figure, given once somebody has actually looked, and unchanged afterwards.

Rug washing Bald Knob, on the range above Maleny
One selector, four names, two that stuck
In 1882 James Campbell took up four selections on the high range above Maleny, each of 160 acres, and named them Ellamore, Bald Knob, Balmoral and Ellerslie. All four linked up to what later became the Maleny Landsborough Road, the spine that still connects this part of the range. Two of those names outlived the rest. Bald Knob carried through from Campbell's own selection to the locality that exists here now, and the neighbouring Balmoral selection went on to name what is today Balmoral Ridge next door. Separately, one historical account records the mountain itself as having been named by selector Samuel Burgess around 1895, for the way its lightly forested, comparatively bare top stood out against the dense vine forest covering most of the range at the time. The two accounts are not forced together here, because the sources do not settle it.
Something that stands out because it looks different from everything around it is exactly what we are trained to notice.
Two hundred and eighty people across twenty square kilometres
This is genuine range-top farming and acreage country. Small holdings and larger rural blocks are strung along the ridge roads back toward Maleny, most of them well off the beaten track even by hinterland standards, and the census counts have barely shifted in a decade: 254 residents in 2011, 253 in 2016 and 280 in 2021. That is a small locality and it is described here as one, without dressing it up into something busier. The homes run to timber farmhouses and more recent pole homes with big verandahs, and the interiors follow that. Hard floors, wool rugs in front of wood heaters, and paddock dust carried in on boots. Two named peaks sit inside the locality's own boundary, Bald Knob at 462 metres and Wilkes Knob at 477, which is a fair indication of the ground the driver covers to reach a house up here.
Ash on top, range damp underneath
The Blackall Range catches cloud, drizzle and cool nights, and is colder and damper than the coast by a clear margin for most of the year. That produces a two-layer problem in a rug and neither layer behaves like the salt and sand a beachfront piece deals with. Wood fires run for months up here, so ash and fine soot settle into the pile continuously through winter, along with dog hair and whatever comes in off the paddocks on boots. Underneath that sits a base layer of range humidity that never really leaves, because the air outside is rarely dry enough to draw it out. A vacuum lifts the loose top and leaves both. A full immersion wash floods the foundation and carries ash, soil and trapped moisture off in the same rinse. The drying that follows is done flat, in a room built for it, which is a thing mountain air cannot manage at any time of year.

Down off the range to the wash floor
The climb and the distance are both ours, and neither appears on your quote. Bald Knob is collected on the range loop with Balmoral Ridge and Maleny, and the driver confirms a time once the loop is set.
Four selections, a bare summit and a hall on the range
A small community that built what it needed rather than waiting for it.
James Campbell took up four 160-acre blocks here in 1882, naming them Ellamore, Bald Knob, Balmoral and Ellerslie.
A name chosen by one selector in 1882 has held for well over a century on a stretch of range still running to small farms, and that kind of patience is exactly what a good wool rug repays when it is washed properly rather than replaced.

One historical account records the 462 metre peak as named by selector Samuel Burgess around 1895, for a bare top standing out against vine forest.
A feature that got its name because it looked different from everything around it is a fair description of an honest assessment, which starts with looking closely rather than assuming what a rug needs.
According to one historical account, the peak's own name was given by selector Samuel Burgess around 1895, describing how its lightly forested, comparatively bare top stood out clearly against the dense vine forest that covered most of the surrounding range at the time. Whether Campbell's 1882 selection already carried the name or Burgess's naming of the peak came slightly later is not settled by the sources, but the description fits the country exactly: a working range where clearing showed first on the highest and most exposed ground.
Bald Knob ran its own state school from 1909 to 1945, opened a public hall in October 1924, and drew visitors to a teahouse lookout through the 1920s.
A community that built its own school, hall and lookout on a remote stretch of range did not sit and wait for services to arrive, and neither do we: the driver comes to Bald Knob on the same set run day as anywhere larger.
Bald Knob State School operated from 1909 until 1945, serving the range families through nearly four decades before consolidation moved local schooling elsewhere. The community's public hall opened on 18 October 1924, and through that same decade the Skipper Musk Teahouse Lookout drew visitors up onto the range for the view, a small tourism trade running alongside the district's farming well before the rest of the Sunshine Coast hinterland became a drawcard.

Bald Knob questions, answered plainly
Our rug sits in front of a wood heater. Can the ash actually come out?
Yes, and it usually comes out completely. Ash is fine, alkaline and sits well down in the pile, which is why vacuuming barely touches it and some household products make the grey worse. Immersion floods the base of the rug and the rinse carries the ash off, and the difference is normally obvious the moment the piece goes back down.
How do you work out a price up on the range?
From the rug, exactly as anywhere else. Size, construction, foundation and the load it carries decide it. The number is given once the driver has seen the piece on the verandah, the climb up and back is already accounted for in it, and it does not change. Where a wash will not repay itself, we say so.
Do you actually come this far up for one rug?
Yes. The range loop is a planned run rather than a favour, and Bald Knob is on it alongside Balmoral Ridge and Maleny. Tell us if there is a gate that needs to be left open or a driveway that gets slippery in the wet, and the driver plans around it.
The dog urinated on the rug by the heater. Will washing fix the smell?
Almost always, provided the residue is removed rather than covered. Urine reaches the backing on the first day and cool, damp range air keeps it active for years afterwards. A full bath takes that layer out, enzymes settle the cause, and if the colour has been permanently harmed you are told at the assessment.
Do you also collect from Balmoral Ridge, Maleny and Landsborough?
Yes, all three are on the same hinterland loop, along with Diamond Valley and Peachester. Two properties along the same ridge road can put rugs together on one collection, which is worth arranging up here, and every rug after the first is $20 off.
How long will the rug be off the floor?
About 7 days, collected on one run and returned on the next. A 48-hour express service is available at additional cost. On a range rug we would rather take the standard time, because a piece that has spent winters in damp mountain air needs the full run in the controlled drying room.
