What comes off a Marcoola rug is worth naming: sand from the beach, salt out of the air, and the fine settled dust of a working airfield in the south of the suburb. All three sink toward the foundation. Each rug is read, hand bathed, then dried flat under conditions we set at the facility.

Salt is the reason a beachside rug should be washed rather than surface cleaned. It is a crystal, it holds moisture against fibre, and it does not vacuum out once it has worked down. Water dissolves it and the rinse carries it away. Dye and backing tolerance is settled before any bath is mixed.

Sunscreen is the one that everybody underestimates along here. It is oil-based, it transfers onto wool invisibly, and it then yellows slowly over months before anybody notices there is a problem at all. Testing sets what the fibre and the dye will accept, treatment follows that evidence, and afterwards we give a straight verdict on each mark.

A dog straight off the sand brings salt into a rug on top of everything else, and salt keeps the affected area damp, which makes any odour worse and slower to fade. Submersion takes the source and the salt out together, enzymes then break down what is actually smelling, and controlled drying keeps it from coming back.

A unit locked up for ten days in a coastal summer produces a smell that has already settled into the softest surface in the room, and that is nearly always the rug. Washing breaks the bond and carries the responsible substance off site with the rinse. Nothing scented follows, because guests read scent as concealment.

Under changeover pressure the instinct is to work at it hard and fast, and that is what leaves a permanent mark. Synthetic and machine-made rugs are made for exactly this method and they go back down within hours, which is precisely what a letting property needs between bookings. Run a hand knotted piece through it and the harm surfaces years afterwards. How the rug was built settles the method, and you have the reasoning before we begin.

A few of the original beach houses along here still hold rugs that arrived with the first owners, and salt air has not been kind to those backings. A quick colour test on the reverse tells us whether water is safe. When it is not, compound work in careful sections takes its place, since a faded old weave cannot be brought back later.
