Permanent households wear a rug differently to holiday ones. The load arrives every single day rather than in bursts, so it is even, deep and completely invisible until the rug comes off the floor. Salt is the coastal problem nobody sees, because it is dissolved through the rug rather than sitting on it. It draws moisture out of the air and holds it against the fibre indefinitely. Only volume removes it, so the rug goes right under and the water is turned over until it stops carrying anything. Then the air is driven across it indoors until it is dry through.

Coastal marks tend to be oily rather than dry, and oil holds sand in place, which is what makes a border look permanently grey. The two have to come out together or neither really does. Dyes get tested first, the mildest option runs first, and where the wool itself has been altered by sun through a glass door we say so at the assessment.

Urine reaches the backing on the day it happens and stays there, so the smell surfaces whenever the coastal humidity climbs, which here is most of the year. Immersion is what takes the soluble salts out. An enzyme stage handles the odour source, and drying with driven air keeps the whole thing from re-establishing. Salt in a rug is a moisture magnet, so a coastal house keeps its rugs faintly damp without anybody doing anything wrong. That damp then works on whatever residue is already down in the pile. The wash removes salt and residue in the same process, and no fragrance is added over the top, because scent on a coastal rug lasts about a fortnight.

So the work is kept light, the edges are blended and the pile is groomed level. Where the bath is genuinely the answer, we schedule it rather than fudge it.

Years of coastal air can change how a dye behaves, so what held twenty years ago may not hold now. A swab on a hidden corner settles it before any commitment, and a rug that fails is cleaned with compound worked through in sections. Salt-held moisture plus a closed house is the whole recipe, and the growth needs something organic under it to live on. Treated water removes both parts in a single process rather than tidying up the visible half. The drying room then takes the moisture out completely, and a rug caught inside its first wet season usually comes back with nothing missing.

The moths people see are not doing the eating. Larvae feed underneath, and along whatever sits pinned beneath a table leg, so discovery usually happens on moving day with pile missing in a neat rectangle. A treated bath takes out eggs, larvae and adults at once, the debris washes clear, and the loss is then measured honestly.
