Soil that has come in wet binds to the fibre rather than sitting loose in it, so shaking and vacuuming remove very little of what is actually there. Water is the only thing that releases it. We immerse the rug whole and rinse until the water runs clean, working at whatever strength the dyes and the foundation will accept, which is established before anything gets wet.

Valley staining is mostly mineral and organic together, which is a harder combination than either alone because the two respond to different treatments. We identify what we are looking at, test what the wool and the dye will stand, and work inside that. Then you get a straight account, including any mark that has become a permanent part of the rug rather than something sitting on it.

Damp valley air makes a urine problem worse rather than better, because the deposit in the foundation never dries out enough to stop releasing odour. Nothing applied at the surface reaches it. Immersion lifts the deposit clear of the backing, enzymes break down the compounds responsible for the smell, and drying the rug properly is what finally stops the cycle in a climate like this one.

An odour is chemically joined to the wool, not sitting on it, and in humid air the join is more stubborn rather than less. That is why nothing you can do outdoors here makes a difference. Washing separates the two and the rinse removes what comes free. We add no fragrance, because covering a valley smell simply produces a perfumed valley smell.

Damp fibre is easier to distort than dry fibre, which makes over-working a spot even riskier here than elsewhere. Pressure crushes the pile around the mark and pushes its edge outward, and the wide soft shape that results is more visible than the original. We test the response, keep the work light, comb the surface back, and say plainly when only immersion will finish the job.

Synthetics are built for this and they go back down within hours, which matters when a farmhouse cannot spare a floor covering for a week. Put the same method through hand knotted wool and the harm turns up years afterwards, well past the point anybody would connect it. A valley farmhouse often holds a rug older than the house it sits in, and not all of them can safely be wetted. We test the reverse first and the result is clear within a minute. Where water is ruled out, we work in sections with compound and accept a more limited outcome, because dye that has moved cannot be put back where it started.
