Identifying the rug is the first job and the one that decides everything after it. Hand knotted, machine woven, wool, silk blend or plant fibre: each behaves differently once wet, and a wrong call at that stage cannot be walked back. Once we know, the wash is built to suit, the paddock soil comes out of the base of the weave, and the rinse proves the point.

Working properties send in bigger, older, heavier pieces than a coastal street does, and those are the ones where an assumption costs the most. We establish fibre, check how the dye responds to a damp swab, and look at whether the foundation still has strength in it. Only then does a bath get set. The rug tells us what it can take and we work inside that.

Two marks that look identical from standing height can need opposite chemistry, and the only way to know is to test rather than to guess. A corner swab settles fibre and dye stability. The product follows from that, applied to the smallest area that will do the job. Afterwards you get a straight sentence: it has gone, it has faded, or the rug is better off keeping it.

The pile is where you can see it. The foundation underneath is where it dried, and that layer is the reason a smell keeps returning after every surface treatment somebody has already tried. Reaching it means submerging the whole rug so water passes through both faces. The enzyme stage that follows strips out whatever the smell has been living on, and the drying room closes the matter.

Odour is a residue with a cause, and treating it without identifying the cause is how people end up doing it twice. We look at where the rug lived and what it sat on. Immersion then dissolves the residue itself and the rinse takes it out of the building. No scent is applied at the end, because covering a smell only moves the problem forward a fortnight.

Some pieces fail the swab, and that result is useful rather than disappointing, because it changes the plan before any damage is done. Compound work then goes over the rug in measured passes, taking soil out without wetting the structure. It is slower and it is quieter, and on a rug whose weave has lost its strength it is the only sensible route.

The variable that decides the outcome is not the volume of water, it is the hours between the spill and the phone call. Larvae work in still air, so the loss starts in a spare room or a rolled rug long before anyone sees thinning. Identification matters here because treating wear as damage, or damage as wear, both waste a season. We will not put a finish on everything, because on some constructions it earns nothing.
