The Eagleby Wetlands at 293 Logan Street are one of Logan City's best birdwatching reserves: melaleuca and brackish swamps, woodland and a central freshwater lake beside the Albert River, home to more than 200 native bird species. The 150 metre Melaleuca Boardwalk runs to a viewing platform over the lagoon, a 230 metre walk links four bird hides, and both paths are wheelchair friendly.
The suburb started life under an unexpected first name.

Eagleby's first recorded name was Philadelphia, back when it was farm country attached to Beenleigh. The name it kept is said to have come from an early settler asking a local Aboriginal man about an eagle on a nest, the answer mixing two languages into one word; another account simply joins the district's eagles to an old suffix for a settlement. The farming era ran deep here: the suburb's sugar mill worked until 1943, the second-last mill running in the whole Logan and Albert district.
Opened in 1906, closed in 1966, returned twice over when the suburb boomed.

Eagleby Provisional School opened in 1906 and became Eagleby State School on 1 January 1909, serving the river farms for two generations before closing in 1966 when the children thinned out. A suburb that once could not fill one classroom now runs two state primaries.
