The name is believed to have come from Irish settlers who knew Waterford at home and found a workable crossing here, a ford over the Logan River that made this the natural place for a town. Surveyor William Fryar recorded the name on 11 June 1866 and the first town lots sold that July, which puts Waterford among the earliest surveyed towns on the river. The crossing came first; everything since has been built around it.
Waterford's school opened in 1869 with 22 children on the roll.
A century and a half of school mornings says everything about how long families have made their lives here. Their rugs come to us rolled at the front door and go back washed, in about a week.
Logan Provisional School opened on 28 June 1869 with 22 students, a slab-and-shingle affair serving the farm families along the river. At the start of 1871 it moved and took the town's name, and as Waterford State School it has carried the district's children ever since, more than 150 years of continuous schooling with around 519 students on the roll today. Few schools in the City of Logan have a longer unbroken story.
