Founded by German families and named, it is believed, for biblical Bethany.

German settlers took up this bend of the Logan in the 1860s, and by 1866 a small township had grown, its name believed drawn from Bethany, the biblical village. The families farmed the river flats and built their community around their faith from the very first years, and the suburb has carried both the name and the connection ever since, one of the earliest chapters of European settlement anywhere in what is now the City of Logan.

The settlers built their first church in 1864, a slab building on ground that now lies along the railway line, within a year or two of arriving. In 1872 the congregation raised the church that still stands close to the site of the first, and the parish has been the thread of Bethania life across three centuries of Sundays. The Lutheran school nearby, opened on 27 January 1976, carries the tradition forward with around 328 students.
The rail crossing at Bethania has been rebuilt around Logan floods since 1887.
River suburbs teach their rugs about damp. When a wet season leaves wool smelling musty, an immersion wash with complete controlled drying is the only real reset, and ours is twenty minutes down the M1.
The Beenleigh line reached this district in 1885, and the Logan had its say almost immediately: flood destroyed the first rail bridge at Bethania in 1887. Its replacement, a mix of concrete, steel and timber, carried trains until 1972, when the present pre-stressed concrete bridge took over. The sequence tells you what locals already know, that the low ground floods now and then, and the suburb is built around respecting it.
