Locals long called this district Hubner, after brothers John and George Hubner who arrived in 1893, and the name survived informally for nearly a century. When the Shire of Beaudesert formalised the suburb in 1987 it chose Crestmead, the name of the local housing estate then filling the paddocks, and the estate name won the map. The Hubner name lives on only in local memory and street history.

Crestmead's farming era began with Swedish immigrants who arrived on the ship Chyebassa in 1885 and took up land here, growing oats, maize, potatoes and turnips on the flats.
