The heritage-listed cemetery is a quiet patch of the 1890s inside a suburb of ten thousand people. The other founding story is underground: gold was discovered at Mount Taylor in 1885, and Kingston spent decades as an on-again, off-again mining field, surveyed in 1913, open-cut from 1932, finally quiet from 1954. On 19 October 1991 the Mount Taylor Parklands opened over the old workings, turning the diggings into green space.
