A family rug wears in a pattern you can read. There is a path across the middle where everybody walks, clean edges under furniture, and a load in the base of the pile that has been arriving daily for years. Vacuuming maintains the top of that. Putting the whole rug through a bath is what shifts the rest of it back to where it started.

Every rug is run under water until the outflow stays clean, which on a household piece takes longer than people expect the first time. There is no shortcut version of this and no way to do it in a lounge room. Once the water stops changing colour the rug is brought up to temperature and dried indoors, flat, not out on a Nambour verandah.

Household stains are a mixed bag and each one behaves differently, so nothing is treated the same way twice. Sugar-based spills feed odour later even after they look gone. Ink sits in the fibre and moves if it is attacked wrongly. We test the dyes, work from the gentlest option upward, and are honest about which marks have already set for good.

Urine goes through the pile and stops in the backing, so the rug reads clean and still smells whenever the weather turns close. Immersion pulls those salts out because they dissolve, an enzyme stage removes what generates the odour, and controlled drying keeps the whole cycle from starting again. Colour the acid has already taken is pointed out before we begin.

This is accumulation rather than any single incident, and it is why nobody in the house can pick it. Odour builds at the base of the pile across seasons until it becomes part of the room. Washing dissolves what it has attached to and the rinse takes the lot away. We add nothing perfumed, because a perfumed rug is a rug with the problem still inside it.

The limit is worth knowing before you ask for it. Cleaning one patch on a rug that has taken years of family traffic can leave that patch brighter than everything around it, which reads as a repair rather than a clean. We work light, feather out and groom the pile level. If the rug really needs the full wash we will tell you that plainly.

These pieces are meant to be replaced eventually and steam suits them, so they are cleaned quickly and are back down the same day. Wool is different, and putting a wool rug through the same process leaves it flat, slow to dry and sometimes shrunk at the edges. What you have decides what happens, and we say which it is before touching it.

Age alone does not rule a rug out of the bath, but unstable dye does, and that has to be established rather than assumed. A hidden corner is swabbed, and if colour lifts onto the cotton the rug is cleaned dry instead, compound worked in and drawn back out. Nobody can reverse a colour that has run, which is why we check rather than assume.

Speed matters more than anything else you do. Ring while it is wet, tell us what the water was, and the rug is stabilised and dried before any decision about washing is made. Wool left rolled and saturated begins to break down at the foundation within days, and once that has started the damage is structural rather than cosmetic.

Inland humidity keeps a rug damp longer than anyone credits, and mould only wants that plus something organic to live on. Treated water removes the growth and the food together in one process, which is exactly why a surface wipe never lasts. The drying room then takes the rug well past dry, and a piece caught inside its first season generally shows nothing.

Nobody sees the larvae doing it. They work the underside and the covered edges, so the first anyone knows is bare foundation appearing when the furniture is finally shifted for a move or a paint job. A treated bath ends eggs, larvae and adults in the same process, the debris rinses out, and the true extent can then be measured.

The claim stays small on purpose. A treated rug gives you a window between the spill landing and the spill reaching the backing, and in a busy house somebody usually gets there with a towel inside that window. Nothing about the feel or the colour changes. Where we think a rug does not need it, we say so and leave it off.
