Rug washing Bungalora, up where the border run gets quiet

A name that points at the ground

Bungalora takes its name from an Aboriginal word describing the red soil hills it sits on, adopted in the 1870s by an early pioneer settler for the high ground between North Tumbulgum and Terranora. What makes that worth noting is how little the name has aged. The hills are still red, the soil is still what the hobby farms and semi-rural blocks across this locality are working, and the description that seemed accurate a hundred and fifty years ago has not needed revising once. There is no strip of shops here and there never was. This is a place that sits between two better-known neighbours and gets on with things without a main street to organise itself around.

A name that still describes the ground after a century and a half is a name nobody had to improve, and we take the same view of a good rug.

Seventy three people, and what that means

The population went from 69 residents at the 2016 census to 73 in 2021, which makes this one of the smallest localities anywhere on our Northern NSW run. We are not going to dress that up, and there is no version of these numbers that turns into a growth story. What the figure actually means is a district of hobby farms and semi-rural lots where most households have been there a long time and nothing turns over quickly. For a rug business, small and settled is a good combination rather than a marginal one, because settled households own original rugs that have never been washed and are usually far more recoverable than their owners assume. The work here is not thin, it is simply spread out, and a scheduled run handles spread out perfectly well.

Red hills, and the damp that stays in them

Sitting on the hill country between the Tweed's coastal flats and the deeper valley hinterland gives this locality the region's defining damp in a slightly different form. Water moves through red soil rather than sitting on top of it, so the ground itself holds moisture long after rain has finished, and a house set into that ground shares the condition. Add the caldera catchment overhead and there is very little genuinely dry time in a year. Indoors, that produces the usual sequence in the usual order. Mustiness arrives first, mould appears on the underside of anything lying flat, and moths find damp wool easier work than dry wool. A single wash resolves all three, and all three come back if the rug is dried anywhere near the conditions that caused them. That is the honest reason a rug from a hill block goes north for a week rather than being cleaned where it lies, and it is the one part of the job we will not shorten to suit a schedule.

Rug Cleaning Bungalora

Just over three square kilometres of red soil hill country between North Tumbulgum and Terranora, about ten kilometres southwest of Tweed Heads.

Hill country delivers soil downhill, which sounds obvious and matters more than people think. A house set into a slope receives material moving with gravity as well as material carried on feet, so the volume reaching a rug is higher than the same household would generate on flat ground. We gauge how much is actually in a pile before deciding anything, because on a slope the surface reading is misleading.

  • A slope delivers soil downhill
  • Higher volume than flat ground
  • The surface reading misleads

Rug Washing Bungalora

Full hand immersion for the wool in hobby farm houses and semi-rural homes where a good rug tends to be a permanent fixture.

Small holdings buy carefully and keep what they buy. The rug in a house like this was chosen once, put in the main room and left there, which means it has one very long history and no maintenance record at all. That combination is our favourite kind of work, because the wool is usually still sound underneath and a bath demonstrates it inside an hour of going in.

  • Chosen once, kept permanently
  • A long history, no maintenance
  • The wool is usually still sound
Most popular

Stain Removal

Red hill soil off a driveway, a spill in a farmhouse kitchen, and something that arrived on a wet boot years ago.

Red hill material is fine and it carries colour, so it does not simply sit in a pile the way coarse grit does. It settles between fibres and tints them, which is why a rug here reads as tired rather than dirty. Nothing dissolves it, since there is nothing to dissolve. It has to be loosened in water and flushed out, and the account afterwards says exactly how much came.

  • Fine, and it carries colour
  • Tired-looking, not dirty-looking
  • Loosened, then flushed

Pet Stain and Odour

A dog with the run of a hobby block, and a rug at the door that has quietly absorbed a decade of it.

Where an animal has a favourite indoor spot the damage goes down rather than out, so after a few years the deposit sits in the foundation with a perfectly ordinary-looking pile above it. Nothing worked at the surface reaches it. Immersion floats it up and out, enzymes take apart the compounds responsible for the smell, and the drying stage decides whether the result lasts.

  • The damage goes down, not out
  • An ordinary pile above it
  • Drying decides whether it lasts

Odour Removal

Woodsmoke in a small house, a shut-up fortnight of wet weather, and the flat note a hill property picks up in winter.

Odour is chemically fixed to wool, so a rug on a hillside clothesline loses very little of it even on a good day. What moves past the fibre is air, and air does not break a chemical bond. The bath does, and the rinse carries off what is released. Nothing scented is added at any point, because a fragrance would be the most obvious thing in a house this quiet.

  • Air does not break a bond
  • A clothesline day loses little
  • A fragrance would be obvious

Rug Spot Cleaning

A recent mark on a rug that is otherwise fine is generally better handled at the house than sent north for a week.

Home attempts go wrong through force every time. Wool pressed flat under a brush does not come back up, and colour driven sideways settles into fibre that was clean, so what remains looks worse than the accident did. On site we work inside what the pile allows, settle the surface back into its own direction, and say plainly when the mark needs a bath rather than a visit.

  • Force, every single time
  • Worse than the accident looked
  • Plainly said when it needs a bath

Rug Steam Cleaning

Hot water extraction, right for hardy synthetics: a mat inside a farm door, machine-made pieces and a runner along a short hall.

Pieces built for the method take it comfortably and are underfoot within hours, which suits a house where one door does nearly all the work. Send hand-knotted wool through the same treatment and the damage turns up years later, past attributing it to anything. What a rug is made of decides the method, and we say which is getting what.

  • One door does nearly all the work
  • Underfoot again within hours
  • We say which is getting what

Rug Dry Cleaning

Compound instead of water, for a piece that has been in a small house a long time and would not survive a bath intact.

A very small locality still holds very old rugs, and the smallest houses often hold the oldest, because nothing was ever replaced while it still did its job. Some cannot go into water at all. The reverse tells us in a minute. When it does, the fallback is compound worked through in small sections, which reaches the upper pile and no deeper.

  • Small houses hold old rugs
  • No reason to replace what works
  • It works at the top of the pile

Water Damage Restoration

A tank fitting that failed on a slope, a washing machine outlet that came adrift, or a pipe that split under a small house.

On a hillside block water rarely stays where it started, so the rug that gets wet is often not in the room where the failure happened. That makes the source harder to identify and more important to establish. Tell us what you found and roughly when. Nothing is assessed until the piece has been dried out and stabilised, and there is no charge for the assessment.

  • It rarely stays where it started
  • Harder to identify, more important
  • No charge for the assessment

Mould Rug Cleaning

A shadow on the reverse of something that has not moved in years, or a rug rolled into a shed on a wet hillside.

Being up on a hill helps a little and not enough. Air moves better than on a valley floor, but the ground stays damp under red soil and a rug lying flat on a cool floor never sees moving air anyway. The bath ends the growth, rinsing takes the residue with it, and the drying room removes the water. Return it dry and it is finished.

  • Better air, damper ground
  • A flat rug sees none of it
  • Return it dry and it is finished

Rug Moth Treatment

Wool under a bed in a small spare room, or a rolled piece standing in a shed corner since some previous autumn.

A small house has fewer rooms and a hobby block has more sheds, and the sheds are where the risk sits. A rug put away dry in April can be in quite different condition by September without anybody opening the door. One treated bath ends every stage of the cycle together, chewed fibre goes out in the rinse, and the loss can be counted properly only after that.

  • Fewer rooms, more sheds
  • Dry in April, different by September
  • Counted properly, only after

Stain Protection

Once a rug is washed we can put a clear finish over it, and on pale wool above a red soil hill that is a reasonable question.

What it does is buy time against fine material rather than stop it. Red dust stays in the upper pile instead of settling between the knots, which usually means a vacuum can actually collect it. We call that a delay because that is what it is, and it leaves handle, sheen and colour exactly as they came out of the bath.

  • Time against fine material
  • A vacuum can actually collect it
  • Exactly as it came out of the bath

Three Bungalora notes

A red hill name, a quiet position and the smallest count on the run

A hill locality between two better-known neighbours, getting on with things.

Named for the red soil hills

Bungalora takes its name from an Aboriginal word describing the area's red soil hills, adopted in the 1870s by an early pioneer settler for the high ground between North Tumbulgum and Terranora.

A name that describes what is actually underfoot, rather than something dressed up for effect, is the kind of local detail worth knowing before we drive up a driveway.

Between Duroby and North Tumbulgum

The locality sits between Duroby to the west and North Tumbulgum to the south, red soil hill country in the Tweed Valley hinterland where hobby farms and semi-rural lots outnumber anything resembling a shopfront.

A locality quiet enough that a family rug can stay in one room for twenty years is exactly the kind of place where a proper wash makes the most visible difference.

One of the smallest counts we service

Sixty nine people were counted here in 2016 and seventy three in 2021, which is a small rise but a real one across just over three square kilometres of hill country.

Size changes nothing about the standard. A farmhouse piece that has never left the property gets the same honest assessment as a rug from a suburb of sixteen thousand.

The hills between two neighbours

The hill neighbours we call on too

The run works across the red hills and drops toward the river on its way back.

Good to know

Six questions from the Bungalora hills

There are seventy odd people here. Is one rug worth your trip?

Yes, and it is not a special trip. The border run already passes through this hill country on its scheduled day, taking in Bilambil and Terranora alongside it, so a single rug from a hobby block is an ordinary collection and the driving does not appear on your quote.

What decides the price?

The rug, opened out and read in front of us. What it is woven from and how, then how big it is and what shape it is in. The figure lands at that point and stays there, and a Bungalora address changes nothing about it.

The rug has been in the front room for twenty years. Is it past helping?

Usually not. Wool that has been kept out of direct sun ages slowly, and what most people read as fading is a soil load holding the colour down. The inspection separates the two and tells you which you have, before any work is agreed or any money is discussed.

The dog has used the same spot by the door for years. Can it be dealt with?

In most cases yes. Repeated use sends urine down into the foundation while the pile above still looks ordinary, which is why it goes unnoticed for so long. Immersion floats it back out, enzyme work handles the compounds behind the smell, and any dye damage underneath is shown to you at the assessment.

Do you also collect from Bilambil, Terranora and North Tumbulgum?

All three are on the same leg, with Duroby and Carool taken as the run works across the hills. Blocks out here sit well apart, so if a couple of neighbours send rugs on one morning it makes the day easier, and $20 off applies to each rug after the first.

A rug has been rolled in the shed since last year. Should I check it?

Yes, and unroll it outside rather than inside. A shed on a red hill holds more damp than people expect, and a rolled rug has nowhere to lose moisture. If there is any smell at all when it opens, ring us at that point. It is still an ordinary wash at that stage.
