Rug washing Duroby, a bit over an hour to the wash floor

Two entries in the register, and why that matters to a driver

Duroby and Upper Duroby are two separate localities, not one place written two ways. Duroby recorded seventy four residents at the 2021 census. Upper Duroby is listed on its own with a population of about 118 across roughly 5.6 square kilometres. That is a small distinction on paper and a real one on the day, because a van sent to the wrong entry is a wasted morning for everybody. We check which of the two an address belongs to when the booking is made, the same way we check what a rug is made of before we decide how to wash it. Neither check is glamorous and both of them prevent the kind of mistake that is very annoying to fix afterwards. The rest of Duroby is straightforward: semi-rural blocks and small farms in the red-soil hill country, sitting on postcode 2486 with Bungalora next door on one side and Glengarrie in the same belt.

Getting the address right and getting the rug right are the same discipline. Check the detail, then act.

Almost exactly halfway, and what that gets you

Duroby is about fifteen kilometres from Tweed Heads and about fifteen from Murwillumbah, which puts it near enough to the midpoint between the coast and the valley that it does not belong clearly to either. In practice that is an advantage. The hinterland run passes through this belt on its way between the border suburbs and the valley road, so a house on a hill here is not an awkward detour, it is simply one of the stops. Households here tend to be long-standing and owner-occupied, which shows in the rugs: pieces that came with the family, have stayed in one room for twenty or thirty years, and have never been off the floor. Those are the best possible candidates for a proper wash, because almost all of what looks like wear turns out to be accumulated soil rather than damage to the pile. We check the reverse to prove that rather than asking anyone to take our word for it.

Cloud country, and the part that has to happen at Yatala

Ask anybody on these hills what their house does in a wet fortnight and you will get the same three answers: something behind the furniture, a smell in the front room, and a rug that feels dry on top and is not underneath. All three have one cause, which is air that never gives the base of a wool rug a chance to finish drying. Soil and smell come out in a bath easily enough. Whether they stay out is settled entirely in the hours afterwards, and there is no month here when those hours can be managed on site. The border run takes the rug north for exactly that reason, and brings it back about a week on.

Rug Cleaning Duroby

A semi-rural locality of seventy four residents in the Tweed hinterland, roughly an hour and five minutes from the wash floor.

A small locality gets exactly the process a large one gets, and it is worth saying because people here expect otherwise. The rug is opened out, checked front and back, and given a figure taken from what it is. Nobody has ever been quoted differently because there were only four houses on the road. The assessment is free and it stays free whether you book or not.

  • Same process, any size locality
  • The figure comes from the rug
  • Free whether you book or not

Rug Washing Duroby

Hand immersion for the wool in these hill blocks, much of it in place for a very long time.

Rugs in a small settled community tend to stay put for decades, which is good for the rug in one respect and bad in another. Nothing gets moved, so nothing gets damaged, but nothing gets washed either, and soil accumulates at the base year after year until the handle stiffens. A bath takes out the whole accumulation at once. Most owners here have never seen their rug in that condition.

  • They stay put for decades
  • Nothing moved, nothing washed
  • The whole accumulation at once
Most popular

Stain Removal

Everyday marks in a quiet house, plus the older ones that have been there since before anyone thought about it.

The straightforward part is a recent spill, and the honest part is everything else. A stain three years old has had time to bond, and the realistic outcome may be improvement rather than removal. We would rather tell you that at the start than take your money and hand back a rug with a paler version of the same mark on it and no explanation attached.

  • Recent is straightforward
  • Three years bonds it
  • Improvement, said in advance

Pet Stain and Odour

A dog on a rural block, in and out all day, and one part of the rug that has taken the consequences.

What makes this problem persistent is depth. The urine has gone through the pile into the foundation, and everything applied from above reaches the top layer only, which is why the smell keeps coming back on damp days. Immersion gets to the layer that matters, enzyme work breaks down the compounds behind the odour, and drying under controlled conditions stops the cycle from restarting.

  • Depth is what makes it persist
  • From above, only the top layer
  • The cycle does not restart

Odour Removal

Damp air in the hills, a room that stays shut, and a smell that has crept up so slowly nobody noticed it arrive.

Odour builds gradually enough in a quiet house that the people living there stop registering it, and it is usually a visitor who says something. That is not a criticism, it is just how noses work. The cause is nearly always moisture sitting in the base of the rug. Washing releases what is bonded there, the rinse removes it, and controlled drying takes away the conditions that produced it.

  • A visitor usually notices first
  • Moisture in the base
  • Conditions removed, not covered

Rug Spot Cleaning

A single fresh mark on a rug you would rather not send away, dealt with in the room instead.

The rule we work to is that the treatment must never be more damaging than the problem. Applied hard enough for long enough, almost anything will lift a stain and leave a crushed, discoloured area in its place, and that trade is a bad one. So the approach is small, tested, repeated gently if needed, with the pile combed back afterwards. If it cannot be improved that way we say so rather than forcing it.

  • Never worse than the problem
  • Small, tested, gently repeated
  • We say so rather than force it

Rug Steam Cleaning

Hot water extraction, the sensible method for synthetic runners and the mats that take the mud off boots.

The case for it is simple: synthetics are built to take the heat and the water, they dry in hours and they go straight back into use. The case against using it everywhere is equally simple. On hand knotted wool the same treatment ages the rug quietly, and the cost is invisible until it is not. Which method applies is decided by construction, and we tell you which yours is.

  • Built to take heat and water
  • Invisible until it is not
  • Construction decides it

Rug Dry Cleaning

Compound cleaning at low moisture, kept for the pieces where immersion is genuinely the wrong call.

Old rugs in old houses are exactly the population where this comes up. Colour that is not stable and a foundation that has gone brittle are the two failures a bath will find, and both are checked before anything gets wet. Where a rug fails, section-by-section work at low moisture is what it gets. It returns a more modest result and we would rather you knew that beforehand.

  • Old rugs, old houses
  • Unstable colour, brittle foundation
  • More modest, known beforehand

Water Damage Restoration

A tank fitting that failed, a burst pipe under the house, or an appliance hose letting go overnight.

A rug on a rural property can stay wet longer than it should simply because nobody walks into that room for two days. The foundation loses strength quickly once saturated, so the earlier the call the better the outcome. Say what the water was, since clean and dirty water lead to different handling, and expect us to dry and stabilise before offering any opinion on the rug.

  • Nobody walks in for two days
  • Saturated means weakening
  • Dried before any opinion

Mould Rug Cleaning

Grey coming through the back of a rug in a hill-country room that never really dries out.

In this country the conditions for growth are present most of the year, so the question is not whether it can be removed but whether it will stay removed. Surface treatment leaves the residue that holds the colony in place, and the residue is what brings it straight back. Immersion takes both out together and controlled drying afterwards drops the rug's moisture level below the point where it can resume.

  • Whether it stays removed
  • The residue brings it back
  • Below the point it can resume

Rug Moth Treatment

Moth activity in wool stored in a spare room, a wardrobe base or under a bed on a quiet block.

Undisturbed is the condition moths need, and a small quiet house supplies it easily. The damage is usually well established before a bare patch or a scatter of dust makes it obvious. One treated wash ends the whole population rather than the part you can see, and the loose fibre leaves with the rinse water instead of continuing to drop at home for another year.

  • Undisturbed is all they need
  • Established before it shows
  • The whole population, in one pass

Stain Protection

An optional clear finish added after the wash, worth a thought on a pale rug in a house with a working back door.

The truthful version is that it gives you slightly longer to reach a spill before it stops being recoverable, and that is the beginning and end of what it does. It is not a barrier, it does not reduce how often washing is needed, and it will not keep a rug looking clean by itself. On a rural block where things get walked in, that small margin still earns its place.

  • Slightly longer to reach it
  • Not a barrier of any kind
  • The margin still earns its place

Three Duroby facts

One of the smallest counts on the run, a position measured both ways, and a name that appears twice

Quiet hill country that rewards being precise about where you actually are.

Seventy four residents at the last count

The 2021 census recorded seventy four people at Duroby, one of the smallest headcounts anywhere on this hub's hinterland run.

A locality this small gets the same honest assessment as any suburb on the run, whether the rug has never left the property or arrived from town last year.

Measured fifteen kilometres in both directions

Duroby sits almost exactly midway between the coast and the valley, about fifteen kilometres from Tweed Heads and about fifteen from Murwillumbah, a hinterland position that belongs clearly to neither.

A community sitting this precisely between two better known places is already on our line of travel either way, which is why nothing here counts as a detour.

Duroby and Upper Duroby, listed separately

Duroby and Upper Duroby are two genuinely distinct Tweed Shire localities rather than one place under two names, and Upper Duroby carries its own population of around 118 across roughly 5.6 square kilometres.

A wrong turn between the two costs somebody a morning, so we confirm which entry an address belongs to before the van leaves. Checking the detail first is how we handle rugs as well.

The sisal rug had been pushed to one side until we could deal with it properly. We liked the look of the sisal rug, but the musty smell was hard to ignore. They explained why drying mattered as much as the clean. We were happy to put it back down as soon as it returned.

Tea stain softened in Duroby
I was mainly worried about the fibres, not just the make-up mark. I made the make-up mark on the Pakistani rug worse by rubbing it with a towel. The stain advice was clear before they took the rug away. It is a fair result and a clear improvement. Because we are in Duroby, pickup saved the usual debate about who was going to load it into the car. I was glad we did not have to replace it.

The hinterland belt

On the same run day as Duroby

A hill-country loop, taken in order between the border suburbs and the valley road.

Good to know

Duroby questions, answered plainly

Is this Duroby or Upper Duroby?

They are two separate localities. This page is about Duroby, which recorded seventy four residents in 2021. Upper Duroby is listed on its own with about 118 people across roughly 5.6 square kilometres. We confirm which one an address belongs to at booking, because both are on our run and we would rather not waste your morning.

There are only a few houses out here. Is it worth you coming?

Yes, and there is no minimum. The hinterland run passes through this belt on its scheduled day between the border suburbs and the valley road, so collecting one rug from one house is part of the route rather than a special trip. The distance is our cost.

The rug feels stiff and the colours look flat. Is it finished?

Almost certainly not. In a house where a rug has sat in the same room for twenty or thirty years without ever being washed, stiffness and flat colour are usually a heavy load of soil sitting at the base of the pile. We read the reverse to confirm it, and the difference after a bath is generally obvious.

There is old dog urine in one section of the rug. Is it too late to do anything?

Rarely. The problem is depth rather than age: what you are smelling sits in the foundation, so anything worked in from above helps for a fortnight and then gives up. A full bath gets down to it, enzymes take apart the compounds causing the smell, and a controlled dry stops it reappearing on damp days.

Do you collect from Bungalora and Glengarrie as well?

Yes, both share this postcode belt and both go on the same border run day, along with Terranora, Bilambil and Carool as the route works back down. Putting a few pieces in the same collection is the efficient way to do it, with $20 off each rug beyond the first.

How long will we be without the rug?

Roughly a week, door to door. Neither leg is a special trip, both sit on run days that were happening anyway, and that is the reason a locality of seventy four people waits no longer than a suburb of seven thousand. Where something genuinely cannot wait, a 48 hour express service exists at additional cost.
