A three by four metre wool rug is not something a household can manage in a laundry, on a lawn or on a deck, and every attempt to do so ends the same way: wet through the middle, dry at the edges, and smelling worse a fortnight later. Taking it away, immersing it, then drying it flat under supervision is the only version that works on a rug that size.

Ridge houses collect a mixture that catches people out: salt carried up on the air, sand walked home from the beaches below, and fine turf grit off the course tracked in on shoes. None of the three sits on the surface. All of them settle at the base of the pile, and all of them leave with the rinse water rather than with a machine that only wets the top of the rug.

Grass is a dye and it behaves like one, so scrubbing at it usually spreads the colour rather than lifting it. That is the mistake we see most often on the ridge. Blot, leave it, and let the assessment work out the right treatment for that fibre. The bigger issue is what happens under the surface. Urine drops through the pile into the backing and keeps producing odour from below, which is why sprays fade within a fortnight and the smell returns whenever the air gets heavy. Immersion clears the foundation, an enzyme stage neutralises the remainder, and taking the drying right through stops the whole cycle beginning again.

Big rugs are the ones this happens to, because a small rug in a breezy house dries out between wet spells and a large one does not. The wash breaks the residue down, the rinse takes it away, and the drying room removes the moisture that let it settle. That last step is the one no household can do with a rug this size, which is exactly why the rug leaves the house.

On a large rug this is often worth doing, because moving a piece that size for a single spot is a lot of effort for a small problem. It is only worth doing if the rest of the rug is genuinely clean, though, and after a few years on a ridge floor most are not. We will tell you honestly which of those two situations you are in.

Estate houses built through the eighties and nineties hold a lot of machine made rugs designed with extraction in mind, and doing them that way costs less than putting them through the tubs. Size makes no difference to the rule that hand knotted and hand tufted work is excluded from it. Those rugs are then worked in sections with compound, kept fully supported so a heavy piece is never dragged, and given the time the method needs rather than the time a schedule wants.

A large wet rug is heavy, awkward and deteriorating by the hour, so the practical advice is short. Get it off the wet floor if you can, roll it, and ring with the history. Mould wants damp and a food source, and a large soiled rug in a closed room hands it both. The bath is run with an antimicrobial additive that kills off the growth, the rinse takes away everything it was feeding on, and the drying is then finished right through the backing. A large rug that goes home nearly dry rather than fully dry will simply produce the same patch again.
