Nothing here is built for visitors: the streets climb from the river flats out toward Willow Vale's acreage, and the week is measured in school runs, sport and shift work rather than tourist traffic. A run of colleges opened here between 1996 and 2005 to keep up with the families arriving. William Alfred Binstead is recorded as taking up the first land here in 1865, beside a ford.

Upper Coomera began at a river crossing. William Alfred Binstead is recorded as the first settler to take up land in the district in 1865, near a ford in the Coomera, and Charlies Crossing Road still carries the crossing's name down to the water. The district's war memorial stands where that road meets Tamborine-Oxenford Road, unveiled on 18 May 1918, months before the war it honours had ended. The crossing country stayed farms for a century after that, waiting for the corridor to reach it.
Cemetery surveyed in 1871, school open by 1876, church by 1889. The estates arrived a century later.
The oldest homes here hold the district's oldest rugs and the newest estates hold its busiest. One run up the M1 collects both on the same day.
The estate streets are young but the district underneath them is not. The Upper Coomera cemetery was first surveyed in 1871 and opened in 1885. The Coomera Upper Provisional School took its first pupils on 23 October 1876, became a state school in 1878 and taught the river families until 1964. The Anglican church on the hill opened on 31 March 1889. Those dates sit quietly behind subdivision names now, but they mean this suburb has been somebody's home for more than 150 years.
