Fifteen square kilometres that existed on paper first
Robina covers 15.0 square kilometres west of the Burleigh lakes, and almost none of it grew the way suburbs usually grow. The street grid, the parks and the waterways were drawn before the houses were, one of the earliest fully master-planned communities in the country and recorded as among the first of its kind here. It is town centre country rather than hinterland country, and there is no sense pretending it is anything else. The population was 23,106 at the 2016 census and 25,659 in 2021, which makes this one of the coast's principal centres in its own right. A suburb that was planned tends to hold people who like things planned, and that suits the way we work.
The lakes and the street lines were on a drawing board before anyone chose a paint colour, and the same order still runs the place.

Because Robina filled in stages rather than in one wave, it now holds every kind of household at once: family homes from each phase since the late 1980s, waterfront streets, and townhouse and apartment precincts gathered around the town heart. Floors come in every combination of tile, hybrid and carpet, softened by large modern rugs, and there is a serious quantity of good wool and designer work in the established streets and in the homes of people who downsized without downgrading. The wash finishes with a clear finish. It is not armour and we never sell it as armour, it is time you would not otherwise have.
What it does is keep liquid sitting at the top of the pile for a while instead of travelling straight down into the foundation. That difference is the difference between a cloth and a callout. Robina's name is recorded as built from the names of the developers who master-planned it from 1980.

Robina did not grow, it was drawn. In 1980 Singaporean developer Robin Loh and local partner Arthur Earle bought the land, engaged international planners including Moshe Safdie, and set out one of the earliest fully master-planned communities in Australia, recorded as among the first of its kind in the country. The name belongs to the same exercise: it is recorded as built from the developers' own names, and it was gazetted on 11 May 1985. The schools from 1990, the street-and-lake geometry and the town heart were all on paper before any of them were on the ground.
Bond University, recorded as Australia's first private not-for-profit university, opened here on 15 May 1989.

It is recorded as Australia's first private not-for-profit university, and its sandstone-toned campus around the lake, with the signature arch building designed by Arata Isozaki, handed a very young suburb an instant landmark. Several thousand students study there now, and the university precinct anchors Robina's southern end.
Robina Town Centre opened in two stages in 1996, on 34 hectares the 1980 plan had set aside.
